Annealed: Book Five of the Pipe Woman Chronicles
Cover Designer: I designed it myself.
Comments about cover design
All of the animals on the covers of the Pipe Woman Chronicles books represent a character who plays a major role in that book. The photos on the other books are fractalized, but this image is more like a firebird. Even though it’s slightly different from the style of the other images, I thought it suited the character it’s meant to represent. However, it’s a lot smaller than the other images, so I had to do more with the title of this book to fill up the cover.

I saw only the word Annealed in red on my sister’s FB Timeline and it peaked my interested having worked on the L1.5 control computer for annealing furnaces. I never saw the bird until I got to this page and don’t know anything about the stories, so I can’t comment on how it relates to the characters.
My only comment is that I think Annealed may have looked better if done in the heat color scheme of metal heating, thus matching the word. Red is actually quite cold for heating metal. The color schemes can be found on this web site, the best I could find quickly: http://members.optushome.com.au/terrybrown/HeatTemperChartEtc.html

Thanks, Sue-Ellen. This is book 5 of the series, and the previous four books all have black covers. That’s why I chose a black background for this one, too. 🙂

Okay, I’m getting all graphic-design geeky here on this cover, because it’s one that I’ve always liked. It’s clean, the font works terrifically, even the symbolism and direction of the flight work to pull it together. A really effective, striking design to wind up a series.

The Firebird has many connotations throughout various cultures. For me, it signifies healing and rebirth. Its use on this cover enhances the title like no other image I can imagine.
Well done, Ms. Cantwell!
