In the latest book of the Starlight series, ‘Together in Starlight’, we find out that Cassie dabbled in Wicca .The book also deals with the supernatural with the Val and its ghostly inhabitants. This subject has a very personal meaning for me. The occult is a bit of a passion of mine and I have my very own beautiful copy of the Malleus Maleficarum , the treatise on how to find and punish witches written in the fifteenth century by Heinrich Kramer, a German Catholic clergyman.
I’m not a hardcore Wiccan. I don’t attend a coven or observe all the Sabbats, (which honour the sun), or the Esbats, (which honour the moon.) I prefer to use Wicca more as a set of principles that I observe and not any form of dogma, something I detest. I have a wonderful collection of occult and magic books, one of which is a famous treatise written by Aleister Crowley.
The subject of witchcraft is also the topic of another series of books I’ve completed, called ‘Double Alchemy’ , a story involving Warlocks, witches, the Witchfinder General and plenty of romance, sex and intrigue. I ‘m also fortunate to live in a place that has a history steeped in witchcraft and unfortunately in witch persecution. Matthew Hopkins, the Essex Witchfinder General, was instrumental in the 17th century of hunting down and executing many people who were rumoured to be witches.
I’ve been to the place he’s rumoured to be buried, in Manningtree in Essex, walked on the same marsh flats he would have walked, and been in a church he probably worshipped in. You can see some of the pictures I took of Mistley when I was there.
It’s a beautiful little village with its own museum in the local library and you can find more about both the town, Essex witchcraft and Matthew himself at the links below.
I’m hoping that my two book series of Double Alchemy, charting the relationship of the arrogant and powerful Quinn Fairmont, Master Warlock and his lady, the feisty Kate Mairston, archaeologist, will be published soon. Unfortunately I tend to write books faster than my poor editor and publisher can keep up with me, so at this time I can’t really say when they’ll be available.
This is a work in progress but you can see an excerpt from the proposed book here
