Born of Dark Collection 1
Vampires the way they were meant to be.
Book 1
Small town Marshfield, Wisconsin, has unwelcome guests. The Unnatural have come to live among—and feed on—the lifeblood of this rural community, this “good stock.”
Keena Markholm, a young woman starting out in life, finds herself drawn to newcomer Master Edgar—a man of dark power and intent. Master Edgar has come to kill. At his side, Keena finds her grasp on the life she knew slipping, and she is thrust into a life, and horror, she never could have imagined.
Book 2
The Unnatural threat grows and strengthens. Keena is put in charge of the cleansings as Master Edgar must embark on a secret mission from which he may not return. Father Joseph readily stands with Keena, while dealing with his own crisis of faith—his increasing pleasure in killing. With Master Edgar out of the way, Chad’s affection for Keena becomes dangerous.
In the background, Dreah makes a decision that could bring down the House of P.O.E.
Book 3
Lightfoot stands watch over a comatose Master Edgar, waiting for “he who would crack the earth” to arise. We discover how Master Edgar came to be and what happened to his wife, Elaine, in Kentucky those many years ago.
Elements within the Catholic Church have formed their own directive against the Unnatural threat. They have begun to distrust House of P.O.E., fearing they would not be able to control the group should the time come.
Father Orin brings Molly Pentinat, a small, determined woman into the House of P.O.E. to fight at their side. Soon, Keena finds her child is missing and begins a frantic search to find him—only to encounter Serena, who has drawn her own forces to the small town of Marshfield.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
As is typical with my work, I start from a dream or daydream image or scenario that contains the kernel for the entire story. The very first scene in book 1 is what came to me in this daydream/pause in life. Thus sprung the inspiration to write story. From that point on it was merely working hard with my companions matcha tea and dark chocolate at my side.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The characters came from that original inspired scene/image and then grew as the story grew. I trust my creative impulse and then let the brain generate the rest of the characters as I write. It may sound odd, but I do not plan the characters, they simply appear as I watch it play out in my head. I simply write down what I see. This actually was a very involved story with around 10 different well-developed characters over the course of 3 novels. I am always along for the ride in the writing process and am so surprised how everything comes together so tightly-fit and in the right places at the right time. I suppose it helps having such clear visualizations in my head and the fact that I've been writing for 40 years.

Detective Nozykowski’s eyes started to gloss. She could feel the change in his heart rate, his breathing. He was becoming listless. As she brought him near her mouth, she was flooded with images she had to fight to suppress. Her memory wouldn’t let her forget anything. This particular situation brought a strong connection to Master Edgar as they lay in bed all those years ago. She felt the soft switch of the memory-image give way to the present moment. She lowered the detective.
As his feet made contact with the concrete driveway, Dreah eased her grip on his throat. She held him close enough for him to feel her breath on his face. In the cold air, it made a flow of hot white mist over his cheek and in his mouth.
His eyes started to refocus. His hands regained their strength and, with that, his struggling.
“Be still, or I’ll snap your neck and draw your blood into my body until you’re dead. And then I’ll visit your wife,” Dreah said, softly. She knew how to generate fear.
Detective Nozykowski struggled for another second before what she said became clear to him. He held still, barely breathing, her hand firm at his throat.
“You realize I can kill you,” Dreah said. She had to lay down the ground rules.
Detective Nozykowski did his best to nod.
“Look at my eyes. My body. There are no tremors. No slurred speech. No rapid eye movement,” Dreah said, staring at him.
Detective Nozykowski looked her over as best he could. She wore what looked like tactical military pants, black as night and having many pockets. A fine tactical vest seemed to attach directly to the black shirt she wore beneath. All of it was form-fitting. He looked at her face. She was beautiful. Dark brown eyes, though in the current lighting they could easily have been black. Five-foot-eight or five-nine and fit. He looked away from her face, feeling that he was somehow cheating on his wife by recognizing her beauty, but his eyes returned. He couldn’t help himself.
“I am what you first thought. Not a drug user pushing the bounds of their metabolism and sanity,” Dreah continued. “I am not the only one. We exist as strongly as your ignorance of us does. Your life changed long before you were born. Some of us tolerate you. The Master Edgar clan is on your side, unless you try to stop them. I am their…emissary, though I do not answer to them. I will kill you if it suits me.”
Detective Nozykowski’s eyes moved as he tried to grasp what she was telling him. Master Edgar! He knew that man was trouble.
Dreah slapped him gently across the face. Gently for her. His head snapped to the side and his eyes rolled back for just a second. He reoriented and tried to focus. Tears rose in his eyes; his cheek turned red.
Dreah drew him close so that her mouth touched his ear. “Release your fanaticism with us, so that we may kill those who threaten the people you serve.” Dreah paused, her tongue touching his ear for good measure. “If you don’t, I’ll come back and kill your wife and then leave you an amputee.”
Dreah released him and held him steady as his balance stabilized. She pulled down his jacket, straightening it for him without taking her eyes off his. “No one will believe you,” Dreah added and then winked at him. She bent down slightly and with one jump cleared his car and was lost into the night on the other side.
