Subtitled ‘An Honest Approach to a More Peaceful Life,’ Van Buren subtly distills meditation ethos with Buddhist concepts and a sense of humor to show how everything life throws your way, good or bad, can be used as a means to self-awareness, and cultivate compassion, acceptance, and loving-kindness. Keying in on the notion that everything we need to achieve inner peace is already in our lives, yet for so many people is blocked by a feeling that who we are and what we have never seem to be good enough, Van Buren shows how to tap into that inner peace through spiritual self-examination, meditation and mindfulness. It’s not about changing yourself, but recognizing your world—internally and externally, warts and all—and fully becoming yourself. No matter how good or bad your life may seem to be, each moment can point you in the direction of peace, compassion, and awakening if you learn how to work with circumstances rather than be worked over by them. Everything you need is already here in this moment, and Be Your Sh*tty Self teaches how to tap into it and enrich your life.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Ever since I began mediation, nearly a decade ago, I've had a passion for sharing these teachings with all willing to listen. Meditation and mindfulness, although simple to practice, are profound methods that have the ability to transform the suffering present in your life. They are practical tools that cultivate insights and wisdom, as well as compassion and loving-kindness. I only hope that people can take the tools in my book and build something great in their lives, regardless of the difficulties and struggles they face!.

There are thousands of self-help books out on the market right now. Books that help you become a “better person” in order to finally be happy in your life. Books that say if you just keep working on yourself, you’ll finally make it – you’ll finally get it all together. This is not one of those books. I am not here to make promises of happiness, or of a “better” life. Rather, I want to help you remember how to just be yourself and how to be completely awake and at ease with all the wonders and terrors of your life. I want to show you how everything you encounter can be used as a path of awakening to the wisdom you already have within yourself, and that whatever arises in your life can be used to cultivate love and compassion for yourself and all beings. More importantly, I want you to stop trying so hard to become an idealized version of yourself, but rather be completely yourself and try to experience deeply each and every unique moment of your existence. Sometimes you will feel incredible and other times you will feel like shit, but being fully present through it all without wishing things to be different is the only way to live deeply; the only way to peace. As I was recently taught, if you’re not present with the direct experience of your life in this moment, no matter what the circumstances, are you really living at all?
