What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
My daughter had a group of friends in our subdivision that discovered a wooded hideout near our townhouse, and their imaginations ran wild. I tried to capture all that my daughter told me in this book. It was a cute idea that involved her in my writing. We wrote a lot of the story together.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The characters are based off of real people, but we changed some of the names. It was important to my daughter AND the story to keep her friends in the book.
Hi. My name’s Ava, and I’m eight years old. I live in a townhouse. That’s a house that’s connected to other houses in the same building. There are six townhouses connected in our building.
One of my best friends, Kitty, lives two doors down. Another one, Lavender, lives two buildings over, on the end. And, the last one, Barbie, lives around the corner, down the street, and around the curve. Together, we have a little townhouse gang… and every gang needs a secret hideout…
And, it just so happened that we came upon the perfect spot. Behind our buildings, there is a wooden wall, separating our houses from a farm field. In between my house and Lavender’s, there is a break in that wall with a waterfall of many rocks, flowing down. It’s just enough to be able to scale the wall like a ramp.
We didn’t know what we would find, but it was an adventure for sure. Lavender was the one to find it.
