What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I've always written stories and the character for this book and series came to me out of an appreciation for men of action. He is an imperfect character who seeks redemption. And I wanted to present a book that people could relate to.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I'm a fan of Jack Reacher and Mitch Rapp. I grew up in urban areas and have rarely seen characters similar to these in urban literature. So I wanted to present my character to fill this void.
I walk into the bar, let my eyes adjust. Look around. Women are wearing their Saturday sluttiest and men are acting alpha. Same old, same old. But, I'm not here for that. I walk past the bar, into the back. There's a guard posted outside an office door. I grab his arm, put pressure on his elbow, punch him in the liver. As he doubles over I kick open the office door and push him through. Grab the pistol from his waist.
To the man behind the desk I say, "Q, do you really wanna fuck with me, bro?"
Q answers, "Whatever your problem is, it ain't me."
I kick the bodyguard in the back of the leg, drop him to his knees. Put the gun to his head.
"My warehouse was hit last night. Killed my lil cousin. They was too sophisticated, man. Random niggas don't move like that. You got five seconds 'till I do your wack ass bodyguard. Then guess who's next. Start talking."
"Hold on man. Look. About a week ago a couple niggas I ain't never seen before came in here asking to buy some radios and drones and cameras. The good shit. The expensive shit. They spent a couple thousand dollars. They said Big Duck sent them, and I do business with Big Duck all the time so I ain't think nothing of it. Man, I'm a salesman. Not a robber or a killer. You need to go holla at Big Duck."
I'd heard of Big Duck, but our paths had never crossed before. He ran a crew that was mostly into hustling. So, if Big Duck was behind the hit on my warehouse it could mean he was making a play for my territory. Which would be a pretty bold play. My position ain't weak. I have a veteran crew that has won a few wars. Decisively. I can stand to pay for a war, although that's not an expense I want to carry on my shoulders right now. And his business is strong right now. If there was something wrong with his product, or if he was having a shortage, his customer base would be migrating, and we haven't seen that.
Nah, something else is going on here. Not one to overlook the obvious, I'll start making preparations for this possibility, but the best way to get answers is to find Big Duck and ask him. It's time our paths finally crossed.
Back at the warehouse, I sit down with my top guys to talk about how we're going to handle this situation. JoJo, tall, skinny, and cerebral, overseas daily distribution operations when he's not being occupied by one of his many girlfriends. Hogg, who's ironically a Muslim and a former Marine, is the head of security and our armory. Duster runs the warehouse, overseeing imports, exports, packaging, and accounting. And CG… That's my all around guy. He knows every aspect of our operation, can get things done outside of normal business operations, and has been with me from the beginning, since we were going in on quarters, pulling all-nighters at the trap house.
I look over my team. First and foremost, Hogg will be increasing security across all operations, both legal and illegal; adding extra cars to transportation routes, hiring armed security for the legal store-fronts, and posting two man roving patrols with an elevated spotter outside all of our trap houses. All the extra security will cut into profits, but it's worth it to protect our people and investments.
Since JoJo heads distribution, he will get the teams on the streets to start collecting any and all relevant information from their client base. Users from all over the city interact and get high together, compare product, and most important to the current situation: they gossip. JoJo will let everyone know to hook up anyone that has information with extra work. Then I'll sit down with my heads to filter out the bullshit from the relevant info.
Duster will work the numbers. Look for discrepancies in sight revenue that could point to an in-house job. You have to make sure your own house is clean before you start to clean out someone else's. So, if we need to do some house cleaning, the numbers will reveal it.
And CG… well, he's the only person I told about Big Duck. First off, I don't want my guys subconsciously making evidence fit a theory. Plus, I don't want any of the younger hotheads prematurely starting a war with the wrong opponents. I know that anything I tell CG will get lost within the depths of his mind only to surface in conversation with me and me alone. And, I respect his mind. So I give him the full picture and let him run with it to conduct his own investigation.
