What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
All the way back in October of 2017, I attended my monthly writer group meeting and we discussed nontraditional formatted children's books. One of the books discussed was Oops, Pounce, Quick, Run! An Alphabet Caper by Mike Twohy, which is a story told in alphabetical order with only one to two words per page. Someone in the group challenged the rest of the authors to create their own story with a similar structure and that is how Aah! Blown Away, Crash! An Alphabet Misadventure started.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I didn't have a specific character in mind as I started creating the words for Aah! Blown Away, Crash! As I was thinking of words for the story, though, I realized the book would only make sense with a bird (or some other animal that could fly) as the main character. My daughters and I worked together to create a dummy for the story as a fun project, and they came up with the look of the main character. They insisted he had to be red and have three tufts of feathers on the top of his head. In the book, the main character does not have a name, but we nicknamed him "Finch" even though he is clearly not a finch. Aah! Blown Away, Crash! ended up being illustrated by my 12-year-old daughter using a computer program.
