Why I Kissed You: A Pride and Prejudice Variation Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 902 ratings

Although she vehemently refuses the marriage proposal of Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth Bennet soon learns that an unexplainable moment of passion that occurred between them has led a furious Lady Catherine de Bourgh to demand she be thrown out of Mr. Collins’ house!

Fitzwilliam Darcy, although his pride was wounded by Elizabeth’s rejection, finds he cannot allow her to be harmed by his aunt’s fanciful ambition for a marriage between him and her daughter. Fearing further action may be taken to damage Elizabeth’s reputation, he knows that marriage is the only form of protection he can offer her.

Elizabeth and Darcy travel to London to begin the arrangements for a wedding that for all intents and purposes shouldn’t be taking place. In the midst of shopping for wedding clothes, sharing the news with family, and meeting Darcy’s noble relatives, Elizabeth is coming to learn more about who Darcy really is than she ever knew before. At the same time, Darcy is navigating the intricacies of realizing how wrong it is to interfere in the lives of others and how to deserve forgiveness from a friend.

Though they act quickly to begin a new life together where one person is in love and the other now unsure of their feelings, Elizabeth and Darcy can’t stop one final attempt to keep them apart forever. But faith and love—and a little bit of luck—will play their part in determining whether there is a chance to pursue the happily ever after that both of them desperately want.

This is a very imaginative story that deviates from canon after the terrible proposal. I enjoyed the original characters and the interactions between our beloved couple. Entertaining!

You know we’ve wanted this to happen for ever so long. Especially since the 2005 screen adaptation came out. So now we have the kiss, and now we have to deal with the repercussions. Brava Ms Combe.

Why I Kissed You was a very entertaining read, the action started immediately and really hooked me in to reading it every chance I got. I didn’t detect any grammatical errors, so well written in that regard. And HEAs for all those deserving of them. Lovely romantic HEAs. And we get lots of Elizabeth and Darcy page time. What a Hero.

One quibble I had while reading this was that we know from the beginning that Lady Catherine is displeased in the extreme. Of course. And she makes her threats loudly heard and plainly understood that she ‘knows how to act.’ I personally think that threat was enough to expect something bad was going to happen and would have been more suspenseful for the reader knowing the consequences were going to hit the fan at some point. Instead we’re reminded of it in the same words countless times when it could’ve been conveyed to the person with just ‘Darcy once again informed ______ of the circumstances regarding Lady C.’ Or words to that effect that changed up a bit and shortened!! We readers already know. Yes. The other shoe does drop, and it is spectacular.

I recommend this to all JAFF fans. This was my first Christine Combe read and won’t be my last.

In that 2005 movie of Pride and Prejudice when Darcy stares at Elizabeth's mouth and she at his, I wanted him to just kiss her! In this variation, they kiss, even in their moment of anger, and the following results are expected. I loved this sweet read, with its surprises and fun dialogs between the characters.
I totally enjoyed this author's writing style in this well-written book.

After the disastrous proposal at Hunsford parsonage, Darcy and Elizabeth share a passionate kiss that surprises them both. Unfortunately, a servant witnesses it and reports to Mr Collins, who reports to Lady Catherine that Elizabeth is trying to compromise Darcy. As a result, Elizabeth is evicted from the parsonage, and Darcy and Elizabeth decide to marry to avoid scandal and Elizabeth's ruin. Once back in London, Darcy and Elizabeth prepare for a hasty wedding, but then Lady Catherine threatens to disrupt their plans.

This is an interesting premise and has great potential. However, there were several events that just didn't sit well with me. Darcy and Elizabeth, and even Lord Disley, the earl, all capitulating to Lady Catherine's pressure and marrying in haste, just seemed cowardly. Why didn't they point out to Lady Catherine that the scandal she threatens would adversely affect her, too? Then there's Anne DeBourgh 's appearance in London at Darcy House, and the way she gets her revenge on Darcy. It's just icky, and could have been easily avoided. Then there's the way that Anne's mess is resolved. Also icky and just wrong. Then there's the intention (thankfully short lived) of trying to pair up our beloved Colonel Fitzwilliam with, of all people, the snooty and vicious Caroline Bingley! Yuck!! Thank goodness that didn't pan out! These and other equally silly events just made the story go off the rails for me.

The book is well written and well edited, and the romance is lovely. I recommend the book with reservations, but it's a pleasant story.

From the beginning of this story, Darcy is in love with Elizabeth. That they then find themselves having to marry to stop Lady Catherine possibly ruining Elizabeth and her family does not put a huge damper on their relationship. Jane is a great character in this variation. She has insightful advice for Elizabeth and is even shows to have a sharp whit. So we see Elizabeth’s slow realization of her feelings for a man who is doing everything he can to show he can change. The Fitzwilliam cousins are on Darcy’s side from the start and bring humor to the story. There is a threat which is resolved with a perfect degree of karma. Overall fun, light read that is enjoyable.

This is not the same MOC, marriage of convenience, story as most JAFF stories are. The angst dial is turned down to “believable”. The proposal goes normally bad but all at once, eyes meet and a torrid kiss happens. Both are embarrassed. Someone has seen the kiss and Lizzy must marry or her family is ruined.

Neither Darcy or Elizabeth act like twits. A story of what it means to marry a man you don’t like and marry a woman who doesn’t like you ensues. I found the full of believable scenes and banter.

I think it is a 4.5 star story but better than a 4 star story, thus the rating.

I genuinely enjoyed reading this story. It had many if the characteristics of the original, but it had its on plot twist and characters. I really loved how Elizabeth and Darcy got together. Was surprised with the finally "enemy" and reason why she was there. the Emotional aspect was incredibly interesting and kept me wanting to finish the story. There was more than a few parts in this in which I checked out loud. Very well written, with little sense hints here and there. Highly recommended to read.

This variation made me laugh a lot, Elizabeth's impertinence and intelligence is always very welcome, I can't get tired of reading about Mr. Darcy for her.

I liked this variation: not too much angst but very entertaining. Lady Catherine’s plan to force Darcy into marrying her daughter is daring, a bit extreme and audacious. Anne in this variation is truly her mother’s daughter! I loved it!

The spin on the letter at Hunsford, Darcy and Elizabeth's's recognition of their faults... so interesting. But what's really unique is Jane and Bingley becoming more than just side pieces, they're not all sweetness and light with anyone let alone themselves. And Darcy seeing firsthand how Jane is affected? Yikes! What an indictment!

Excellent story and an overall super fun read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good first half. Very disappointing second.

*SPOILERS* I really liked the first half of this variation but it went downhill very fast after that! There are pages, and even more pages, toying with the idea of a match between Colonel Fitzwilliam and Miss Bingley. No one really believes that, not even the author who, I think, was only trying to fat her story up. Then you have this really naive (stupid) Darcy who accepts to host Anne de Bourgh for one night knowing that she might try a compromise. Guess what? She does. Can you imagine canon Darcy being that dumb or careless? I can't. Cousin Anne scheme is ludicrous. Elizabeth's very forward reaction to Anne de Bourgh's claim is not believable. I felt she did not have the authority to question and confront her the way she did. I rapidly lost interest. Two stars for the good first half.
