THE BAD SISTER a crime mystery with a killer twist (DI Sam Clayton Norfolk Murder Mysteries series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 554 ratings

MURDER, LIES, AND FAMILY . . .

DI Sam Clayton is called to a murder scene in Holt, not expecting to find his estranged sister at the scene. Her husband, Henry Lambton, has been murdered. Clayton is taken off the case and DS Julie Everett continues the investigation.

Clayton focuses on a vicious arson attack in Norwich. The fire killed a Polish family in their home. It seems to be part of a series of racist attacks connected to an extremist group.

The two crimes stretch the team and both come dangerously close to home. And can Clayton forgive his sister for what happened over twenty years ago?

In a thrilling conclusion, they race against time to prevent more attacks and get justice for their loved and not so loved ones.

The Bad Sister is the second in a new series of page-turning crime thrillers set in an atmospheric part of Norfolk.

Perfect for fans of LJ Ross, Mel Sherratt, Colin Dexter, or Ruth Rendell.

THE TEAM
Detective Inspector Sam Clayton leads the investigation into the North Norfolk murders. He joined the police straight from school as a beat bobby in Manchester before rising through the ranks of the CID. He was transferred to Norwich after being promoted to DI following a high-profile case investigated by Lancashire Constabulary.

Detective Sergeant Neil Pringle lives with his third wife in Norwich, where he was born. But taking care of his two sons with his wife Megan, and two other children with previous wives, has put his finances under strain. He never misses a chance to shine in hopes of securing promotion, and can’t help showing off his local knowledge to colleagues.

Detective Sergeant Julie Everett is an intuitive officer who was promoted to detective sergeant from her home town of Ipswich where she had a background in child protection. She is discreet about her personal life among colleagues, particularly about the tragedy which haunts her. She has to deal with a high-pressure job while raising her child who moved with her to Norwich.

Many thanks to the author / Joffee Books / NetGalley for the advance digital copy of this crime thriller. Opinions expressed here are unsolicited, unbiased and entirely my own.

DI Sam Clayton gets a real surprise when called to investigate a murder. He finds his sister whom he hasn't seen in 20 years. Her husband was found murdered. Clayton is taken off the case, for which he seems extremely grateful. Another of Clayton's team takes over, DS Julie Everett. Is it possible that Clayton's sister is a murderess?

Meanwhile, Clayton looks into the arson fire of a Polish family; a man, his wife and child died in the fire. What he finds is a plot that orders the Polish people to pay protection money ... money which most of them do not have. Was this the reason these people died?

It seems that Clayton has come too close to the case, as he becomes the target of a masked man on a motorcycle. Who is he and what part does he play in the crime?

The story bounces back and forth between the cases. Both Clayton and Everette face personal issues, as well as professional ones. This is a well-written crime thriller featuring characters that are stand-out unforgettable.

This is the second book in the D.I.Sam Clayton series.
Sam is called out to the murder of a classic car dealer. Who, he is surprised to discover, is married to his estranged sister Mel.
In view of the conflict of interests the case is passed to D.S.Julie Everett to investigate.
Sam is told to focus on a vicious arson attack involving a polish family. The attack seems to be linked to a series of racist attacks by a group calling themselves E4E (England for English). This attack is the worst so far with the whole family dying.
The two investigations are well thought out and they do take some twists and turns when Sam can`t resist becoming involved in Julies case, albeit unofficially.
I enjoyed this book, the plot lines and the characters and look forward to reading more in this series.
Thanks to Joffe books for allowing me to read this as an ARC in return for my unbiased review. A good 4* crime thriller.

I decided to give The Bad Sister a shot even though I really didn't like the first book in the series, Murder in the Marsh. I don't think Penketh is my cup of tea. The Bad Sister is much better than Murder in the Marsh but it isn't good enough that I'd recommend it. The detectives aren't interesting and the lead detective Sam Clayton isn't likable. Clayton and his coworker Julie Everett are divided while solving two crimes. Clayton has to recuse himself from the murder Everett is investigating because it involves his sister. Instead he works on the murder of a Polish family. Everett's case is boring and it seems strange the book was titled after it. Penketh would have been better off focusing on the family's murder. I suspect it was added in because the book with two cases was pretty short at 254 pages. Unfortunately, Clayton's case wasn't that interesting either. I'm not sure how the novel has such a high rating but the 3 stars I gave was pretty generous. I went with 3 stars because it was a huge improvement from the first novel. It might be that Penketh's books will get better but I think this will be the last one for me.

A very well written, well constructed tale. It may be too complicated for those people who did not rate it high, but I do give it five stars. The plot is intricate with many threads intersecting. There is a resolutions for each plot. The characters for the most part are credible and human. Plenty of crimes, plenty of twists, but no gratuitous gore or exaggerated description of violence. And, finally, this book is not a cliff-hanger but a novel in its own rights. I will certainly read more books by Anne Penketh.

From the incendiary beginning to the explosive ending BAD SISTER is a gripping page turning experience. Once you start, don't make any plans, because you'll be finishing BAD SISTER in one sitting.
I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!

The Bad Sister by Anne Penketh was a quick read that held my interest. It follows detective Sam Clayton as he investigates (directly and indirectly) a slew of various crimes and eventually discovers how they intertwine. There were several plot twists that I did not see xoming, and I enjoyed learning a bit about the duties of an investigator along the journey. I highly recommend this book.

    3 stars

DI Sam Clayton and DS Neil Pringle have a spate of hate crimes to investigate. The last attack turned out to be murder. And DI Hewett and DS Julie Everett take on the case of a man bludgeoned to death in his garage. His name is Henry Lambton and his wife is Clayton’s long-lost sister Melanie. Clayton is excused from the Lambton case and is told to instead focus on the hate crimes/murder case.

Are the arson/murder cases examples of a hate group called England for English, also called “E4E,” or are they the result of the victims refusing to pay protection money to the local Polish criminals?

Although this book is better than the first one, I find that I still don’t like the main character, DI Sam Clayton. He is cranky and irritable and carries a major grudge against his sister Melanie. Liking a main character seems really important to me, so I only gave this book three stars. Written not too badly and well plotted, this book has a little more to offer than the last. I liked the endings to the cases, although they seemed a bit rushed.

I want to thank NetGalley and Joffe Books for forwarding to me a copy of this book to read.

A Polish couple and their child are the victims of an arson attack on their shop. DI Sam Clayton is on the case. But then he is called to a murder scene only to discover his estranged sister Mel is the victims wife. Forced to concentrate on the arson case Sam soon finds his life is in danger.
Anne Penketh has written another great book. The characters are well defined and the story gripping.
    Highly enjoyable.

A bit slow to begin with but quarter of the way through it had piqued my interest.
There's a lot of surprises, twists and turns throughout this book that I didn't expect.
DI Sam Clayton is hunting down an arsonist where two people and a baby died. Did the arsonist know there was 3 people in that building? Were the culprits connected to the E4E---England for ever? Clayton was devastated to discover that one of his team was involved with the E4E, but who was it?
The icing on the cake when Sam, after so many years apart, came face to face with his sister who had caused him so much pain in the past. What happens after I can only say, buy the book and find out.
Look forward to reading the next in the series.
