Sleep Savannah Sleep: Murder Mystery Kindle Edition
The Dead Don't Always Rest in Peace
Jason Crandall, recently widowed, is left to raise his young daughter and rebellious teenage son on his own - and the old Victorian in Shadow Springs seems like the perfect place for them to start over. But the cracks in Jason’s new world begin to show when he meets Savannah Sturgess, a beautiful socialite who has half the men in town dancing on tangled strings. When she goes missing, secrets begin to surface, and Jason becomes ensnared in a dangerous web that leads to murder - and he becomes a likely suspect. But who has the answers that will prove his innocence? The jealous husband who’s hell-bent on destroying him? The local sheriff with an incriminating secret? The blind old woman in the house next door who seems to watch him from the windows? Or perhaps the answers lie in the haunting visions and dreams that have recently begun to consume him.
Or maybe, Savannah herself is trying to tell him that things aren’t always as they seem - and that sometimes, the dead don’t rest in peace.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2023Allistair Cross enchants me once again in this hauntingly page turning tale of a woman ( Savannah) who was murdered by someone who no one would ever suspect. Wild! Jason, a recently widowed father of two children, Brent (17) his temperamental son and Amber (7) his sweet angelic and spunky daughter moved to the town of Shadow Springs trying to move forward after the death of his wife. As a licensed massage therapist, Jason tried hard to fit in with the towns people.
However, after meeting Savannah Sturgess, his life changes forever. A cold murderer is in the loose in Shadow Springs, and you would never guess who it is!! Dive into this book and you won’t stop reading till you’re at the mind blowing ending. Trust me, you’re going to be upset and shocked at who the murderer is. I screamed in shock frightening my mother lol I am going to reread this over and over again! Poor Savannah Sturgess, will she finally sleep in peace?😢
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2017I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Most of the time I was reading this book, all I could think was ‘dang, this would make one hell of a movie’. Between the atmosphere, the characters, the setting, and all the details that went into this one, it would make for a crazy ride of a film. I would definitely go see it.
Maybe because I just didn’t read it properly, but I didn’t realize that this was going to be a horror novel when I went into it. It made for a very pleasant surprise when all the visions (which I know now is mentioned in the synopsis, but totally missed that the first time around) and chaos started up. It’s got all the usual horror stuff going for it, and the premise and build up probably won’t surprise you much. But once it gets going, you’re in for one hell of a ride.
The Good Points of Sleep Savannah Sleep:
I loved the way Cross took a bunch of fairly standard horror plot points and characters and twisted them for his own purposes. It made it an interesting read, because it kept throwing you off what you expected. And then the ending comes around and leaves you wondering how you missed that through the whole book, because hindsight is 20/20 and all that.
Actually, the ending deserves a point all of its own.
I thought that the world building was well done. It’s not a long book, and you don’t get tonnes of description and setting, but it’s enough that you can easily picture the small town, the buildings, the carnivals, and other locations that come up. Cross keeps things pretty simple on the setting front, which works brilliantly.
Horror is always a tricky genre for me, because without the accompanying soundtrack, I often find that the atmosphere is missing from the story. But Cross does a fantastic job of creating and maintaining the atmosphere throughout the book, which keeps you so hooked into the story.
The Downsides of Sleep Savannah Sleep:
It does use a lot of the same old tropes that we’ve seen a million and one times. And while Cross does a great job of changing things up, it would have been nice to get some variety as well.
Maybe it was just me, as no one else seems to mention this, but I found the first half or so of the book a bit all over the place, like it was having trouble getting settled. It all gelled well later on, but seemed to take some time to get to that point.
All in all, I really enjoyed Sleep Savannah Sleep, and will definitely be keeping an eye out to see if Cross does anything like this again. It’s a great little novel along the lines of classic horror, and will likely appeal to fans of murder mysteries as well. If you enjoy straight forward horror, the idea of the dead being able to communicate with us, and crazy dreams, you’ll likely enjoy Sleep Savannah Sleep!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2019Part suspense, part mild horror and part sad to read. How a widower copes with raising two kids while starting a new business and then there is the town bully going after him and then a murder and awful dreams - - sheesh. A lot thrown in and somehow I felt sorry for the widower but really I wanted him to quit whining and making poor decisions. So, just an okay read for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2017Sleep Savannah Sleep by Alistair Cross is a book in the horror/occult genre which I don't usually prefer. But since reading the blurb, I have been curious and let's just say I overlooked my preference and was I glad!
Jason Crandall, a recent widower, moves into an old Victorian house in Shadow Springs with his teenage son, Brent and younger daughter, Amber. While Amber begins adapting to this new environment, Brent, a recluse, finds it difficult to do so. Jason starts his massage therapy business and finds a client or two immediately. But when he meets the sensual Savannah Sturgess, he realizes it isn't going to be easy to avoid her. Among friendly neighbors, new friends and temper tantrums by Brent, Jason begins to settle down when one day, Savannah is reported missing. And thus begins the nightmare that drags Jason within its deep claws, making him wish he had never set foot in Shadow Springs at all.
From the word go, the book had me in its captivating world. The writing is so impressive that even when not reading, I could visualize the details from the story. The narrative is on point, enhancing the depictions of the events and characters. The story line is equally good. The climax was something that I was waiting for with bated breath and I wasn't disappointed. All the characters are well described, a special mention to the characters of Jason and Savannah. Again, it is the result of the excellent writing skills of the author that both these characters stay on with the reader and I could completely understand and empathize with them throughout the story.
With the technicalities out of the way, I would like to give my honest opinion of the book. I was blown over by the story! This is the first time I'm reading something by the author, and I sincerely wish that wasn't the case! I have been missing out on so much! I rarely pick up anything in the horror/occult genre but this book isn't the kind to give you nightmares. Score!
Last word. I loved the book and would definitely recommend it to those who love thrillers/murder mysteries with a bit of haunting. Truly enjoyable!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Your Typical Ghost Story
Sleep Savannah Sleep is not your typical ghost story, which I didn't anticipate it being, as Mr. Cross has his own unique style of writing that leaves the reader completely engaged and mesmerized. This novel was so much more than I could have possibly imagined, not only was it a cleverly written murder mystery filled with suspense and the supernatural, it was also the journey of a man who was dealing with his own personal demons, facing the harsh realities of loss, and the shocking events that were unfolding within his life in a new town.
There were horrific moments as well as those that held beauty beyond words. I honestly did not want to put it down. I found myself empathizing with the protagonist, Jason Crandall, as if he were a very real person who was actually going through the turmoil that he faced. After reading other books by Mr. Cross, it is obvious that character development is one of his strengths as a writer, he creates fictional characters and then makes them incredibly real to the reader; they don't remain just words on the page, they become the people you are rooting for, the ones you will love, and others whom you will grow to despise.
It is not an easy feat to try to compare Mr. Cross' work to another writer, because he is clearly in a league of his own. In some ways, Sleep Savannah Sleep, held the same kind of atmosphere as some of Stephen King's earlier works and draws you into the story in a very similar way. I firmly believe that it's only a matter of time until Alistair Cross becomes the next big name in horror. This book, like his Vampires of Crimson Cove series, was absolutely genius and I can't wait to begin reading another book by this brilliant author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Twists and turns and an immersive story.
Really enjoyed this. After a slightly slow start, the story then unfolded and was immersive. I admittedly read this in two days because as the characterisation flourished, I wanted to know more. The plot was intriguing and kept me guessing. Gripping dream scenarios and highly descriptive content throughout. The plot twists had me hooked. Great work Alistair Cross. One for the bookshelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read with some nice twists
Recently-widowed Jason Crandall moves his family to the sleepy town of Shadow Springs, hoping it’ll give them all a better life. However, starting a new business as a massage therapist gets off to a bad start when Jason is confronted with man-eater and local socialite Savannah Sturgess, prompting her hulk of a husband to jump to the wrong conclusions.
Struggling to keep his young daughter and disruptive teenage son happy in the new house, Jason must also face a series of weird dreams and visions that seem to come from beyond the grave. Tormented by ghostly images, can he find the truth and uncover a killer before it’s too late?
This spooky horror crime thriller of a book has a lot going for it. Throwing a troubled family into a new situation where not everyone is what they seem, is a difficult thing to get right. Alistair Cross handles the drama well, mixing ghostly visions and a budding romance with a murder mystery that threatens to destroy the family’s attempts at a new beginning. The denouement was a surprise (though the clues were all there), and the ending wasn’t quite as neat as I’ve have liked, but apart from that my only criticism is the author’s use of exclamations marks! Good writing doesn’t need them, and if Mr Cross were to expunge every last one from the text, this would be a much better book.
All in all, a great read with some nice twists.
