Boomerang: An unputdownable thriller with a massive twist. (Detective Jason Smith book 2) (A Detective Jason Smith Thriller) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 915 ratings

Boomerang (Detective Jason Smith#2) by Stewart Giles From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new addition to the popular Detective Jason Smith series.
A MAN IS KILLING PEOPLE IN YORK!
Initially the murders appear to be the random acts of a maniac.
Detective Jason Smith is put in charge of the investigation. It soon becomes clear that the murders are all connected to him in one way or another. All of the killings correspond to events in Smith's life and the murderer leaves dates at the crime scene which tie up to important dates in Smith's history.
When one of the dates is a time before Smith was even born, he realises he must look deep into the past to find a way to stop the worst spate of murders in York's long history. As the countdown begins can Jason catch York’s first serial killer before it’s too late?
THE DETECTIVES DS Jason Smith is an Australian who was sent to York to live with his Grandmother when his sister disappeared from a beach. He has suffered many losses in his short life and is now a dedicated detective. He is a bit of a loose cannon - he has his own way of doing things and that doesn’t always mean following orders and procedures. DS Thompson is of the same rank as Jason, but he doesn’t have the same support or success. He and Jason have a love/hate relationship which brings a bit of humour to the series. Thompson is old school and thinks his age should give him respect and privileges, but life doesn’t work that way for him. DC Erica Whitton is Jason’s preferred partner they work well together and share a bond. She isn’t always appreciated by Jason, but they care about each other and that brings a different dimension to the series. What readers are saying about Boomerang: ‘It's fast-paced and action-packed. I look forward to reading the next book in Smith's adventures.’ – Linda Strong ‘I'm really enjoying this series. This story flips between events in Vietnam with modern day murders.’ – Sarah ‘What a great page turner for the first book I have read by this author.’ - David ‘Really liked this book. Great characters and dialogue, black humour in spades.’ – James O’Neill ‘Great read …. enjoying this series very much.’ – Caroline S

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.

In 2013 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.

3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor Cornwall series.

The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.

I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results. I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series and was published in July 2018.

After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brings together the brooding, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor. Dropzone followed shortly after and the third in the series, The Raven Girl finished things off.

Miranda is something totally different. What was to be a stand-alone psychological thriller, it is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before. The ending begged for a sequel and, Mistress was born. Medusa completes the Miranda trilogy.

There are now 25 DS Smith books available with many more planned for the future.

I wanted a break from the crime thriller genre so I came up with The Divide - a macabre horror tale of survival, but crime will always be my true love.

A new series featuring Irishman, DI Liam O'Reilly begins with Blood on the Island, and that was followed by ten more mysteries set on the island of Guernsey.

When I'm not writing I love sailing, guitars and jumping out of perfectly good planes. I'm lucky to have a huge lake on my doorstep as well as a world-class skydiving drop zone.

A super author with a great balance of personal and professional story-lines. Can’t get enough of this series. You definitely will not be disappointed with this series... I can't wait for his latest. Please start with the first of the series, as it just grows and gets better all the time

Mr Giles has a great style. His stories flow quickly and I can hardly wait to get to the end.

I just finished Boomerang, and I’m glad I read Smith first. The character development has been excellent and I’m hoping to see some of the other players advance. British mysteries with influence from other continents.....what’s not to like?
The DS Smith series is one I will absolutely complete.

    A really hard-to-put-down detective/action novel.

It is not quality story telling when the story revolves around the main character's personal life. It just means the author is not yet experienced enough to make a story about a police procedural untwisting the facts of a murder in solving a case. I faced through to the end and, predictably a person close to Smith dies. The next story is apparently also involving a team member. Time to move on.

I like the stories about Jason Smith, but in this one there is a really glaring error. I don't know if it is just in the Kindle version. Our national airline, Qantas, is referred to as Quantas. It is named after Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Services. After Q we always put U, but Qantas doesn't want us to. There was another glaring homophone mistake, but I can't remember what it was. A bit better proof reading would not go astray.

I hate giving up on a book once I have started to read it but with Boomerang I came very close to removing it from my kindle after a couple of chapters. To begin with I really didn't like the character of Jason Smith but I continued and I am very pleased that I did. Once I got into the story I got over and accepted Jason's annoying attitude. I also have to say that I read this book before the first Jason Smith book which in hindsight I would have preferred to do as it gives quite a lot of background into the character of Jason Smith, but that's not to say that you can't read Boomerang as a stand alone book. I have subsequently downloaded and enjoyed the first Jason Smith book and also the third, Ladybird.

A serial killer is on the rampage in York and DS Jason Smith is investigating. Could revenge be at the root of the killer's motive? Jason may need to look right back into the past to try and solve the case and find the killer. It turns very personal and Jason could be torn apart. A really good read

4.0 out of 5 stars A different theme.

I enjoyed the theme of this book a lot but found the extremely poor editing a huge disappointment. The writing does not quite 'flow' because of this and found myself having to backtrack several times in order to make sense of it. I also found the use of everyone's surnames all the time irritating. Do the police really call their officers by their surnames all the time?
A good read, enjoyed very much but to be honest can't see me purchasing any more because of the very irritating quirks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book 2 in the brilliant DS Smith series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 22, 2018
This is book 2 in a very addictive series I find myself reaching for the next book as soon as I have finished the previous one.

The story begins with a suicide that turns out to be murder. Then Smith's life is changed forever. People are dying and the dates are significant dates from the past. Someone has Smith in their sights but why? What happened all those years ago and why is Smith being held accountable?

This is an adrenaline pumping read from the very first page. The suspense and pace build gradually as we progress into the book and the further I got the more invested I was in the story and the characters.

Lets talk about the characters: Jason is the lead character I have followed his journey from the beginning in Phobia and then Smith but if you haven't read those it is perfectly okay as Stewart makes a brilliant job of building the history into the book. He is flawed he has had a difficult time with many heart-breaking losses and now this! All this comes accross in the book excellently. He is on a mission to put away the bad guys whatever it takes. He is a bit of a loose cannon and a straight talker and that brings humour to the book.

Witton is his favoured partner. She has a lot of feelings for Smith but he isn't returning them, yet. She has Smith's back and that makes her vulnerable at times. I think they are a relationship waiting to happen but we will see. They look out for each other and that becomes very important in this story.

The main theme of the story is Smith's past and part of that is Lucy, an old flame from his teenage years. As the looking back into his past takes Smith out of his comfort zone the murderer is ranking up and the bodies are stacking up. The clock is ticking.

Suspense, twists, turns and curve balls. This book has it all. An adrenaline pumping page turner that I found very difficult to put down. Definitely 5 golden stars from me. Now I am off to read Ladybird.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another brilliant mind blowing read!

Stewart Giles does it again, I've read all the books in this series, back to back, simply because I couldn't leave them alone. May I suggest you read my review for book 1: 'Smith'

Naughty of me I know, but I read them all before I started to review any of them, simply because I became totally and utterly addicted to DS Jason Smith's life. Funny as it may seem this character of contradictions, gets in your head. Go back to a previous book, read a few lines, and you remember the storyline. That says how much you digest of the books in this series, in my opinion!

He's an enigma a loner with a puzzling sixth sense, he captures your imagination with a fist of iron impossible to escape from, not that I wanted to escape of course, I simply didn't want the story to end!

Every book in this series is absolutely gripping, stomach in knots or clenched where you find you have muscles you didn't know you had. Next tears running down to your chin or laughing and giggling, this author's a clever weaver of words and story telling.

This is only book 2 and I was convinced the author wouldn't better it, but believe me he most certainly does!
A gripping impossible to put down read!
