- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2014compelling yet alarming pre-history of the world..
ok ok, so i wanted to grab attention or something..
the Stone Age book grabs your attention.. it might be an advertising "infomercial" for survival food distributors..
this is no terrorist EMP story it has the ring of reality, especially given that we're in a solar maximum time right now..
[play background music here: "stormy weather"]
the author writes about things or places he knows, thats good.. if/when i decided to give authorship a shot i'll draw on personal experience too..
fast moving, interesting characters, diverse settings..
i can just feel the lake house and the crisp air with a slight pine scent, a bit humid in the cooling evening.. family and house guests wandering to and fro some getting ready for dinner and bed, others preparing to leave and go back to the city or elsewhere.. much like late summer at clear lake, calif after a week at the lake house getting ready to head back to reality in 1970's San Francisco..
zooming back in my '66 XKE, over the hill to 101 and then south..
these characters are not going anyplace civilized.. chicago..?! o'hare..? not civilized..
and baja and the sea of cortez.. i think the author has it about right.. pay off the policia and thugs to leave you alone.. i see how THAT worked out for max..
all in all this is a good read and for you, dear reader, to NOT take the embedded warning to heart makes you some sort of fool..
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2014I read a lot of Armageddon books and this one caught my eye because I believe this is a plausible story that may soon come to pass; nature has only begun to show herself. The characters were likable and the story lines covered long spans of time; history to future leaving me to wonder how all the ends will be tied together. There is something about the “reality check” that this book provided that had me doing more research on the subject.
The notes and emails in the book are actual hyperlinks and they work taking the reader to the sites that are described in the book. Interesting concept in publishing that allows the reader to dig deeper as the reality starts to sink in. Prepper or not this book should be an eye opener for those that rely too much on technology without the benefit of knowing and understanding self-reliance. While many do have a bit of stored and prepared emergency materials what is portrayed in this book would require the dedication, funding, and skills that are indicative of the main character Max in order to survive.
I agree with a few of the other posters about spelling and grammar and also was not thrilled about the plane crash scene. That was a bit off and left me wondering if it was a mistake or would it be clarified in future books in the series. The ending did feel a bit rushed and left a lot of open story lines, still I will look for the next book and hope it is not too long in coming.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2014I found this book to be average. The apocalyptic storyline was interesting and the science driving it is unfortunately very real.
As is all too typical in this genre there is very little characterization. This makes it even more unfortunate that the author gratuitously inserts opinions that are not character driven. They just seem to be personal asides on the author’s part that are self indulgent and annoying. i.e. references to god/creator; mentioning that the character opens Microsoft Word and he “never liked using Apple’s equivalent”; when on the space station he says that “these particular modules were older and didn’t have much shielding, as they were built by the Russians. Enough said.” The latter two comments seemed to just be product and political sniping without any purpose.
Even more irritating was what seemed to be a lack of editing. There were so many grammatical errors and typos that it interrupted the flow of the narrative. These days I am not surprised to encounter grammatical errors, but I don’t expect them to be so constant. It seems as if the book was rushed to publication without taking the time to reread it and correct problems.
Finally my last problem is with the fact that the book just stops without any real conclusion. The reader is told to watch for the next book to see what happens. This has become so common on the part of new authors that I just feel ripped off. In my opinion an apocalyptic novel should have either a conclusion or leave the reader with a sense of the future. Personally I am getting tired of all these series. Sometimes books really would have to be too long to contain all the characters and the complete storyline. But I really like a book that is complete within itself. It seems more artful and thoughtful and less commercial.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2017Although this is a book about CMEs causing EMP-like consequences, I like that it also has a feeling of suspense. Max, one of the main characters, has an air of mystery surrounding him that isn't fully explained by his prepper mindset. Throughout the story, there are little tidbits that make you wonder. We follow the lives of several characters as time counts down to a Carrington level event. Some characters are overtly connected, while we are unaware of the threads connecting others. I found this was an entertaining book, that educates about CMEs, gives some prepping ideas and increased my curiosity about what will happen next. I listened to the Audible version, and the narrator, Dan John Miller, did a fabulous job with pitch, flow and intonation. I would definitely recommend this book and Audible version.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really great Book!!
I would give this book a 4, the only reason I do not give it higher is because I hate having to wait to finish the book. I understand this next one will not be ready until Sept. I will have to reread the first one to have all the details.
I was confused by the sudden time changes at the end of the book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Un script pas un roman

5.0 out of 5 stars Great apocalypse reading!
I chose this book because I'm a huge fan of the genre. The first bonus is that this is more like old school apocalypse books, and not the usual modern zombie releases. It's a well set-up page-turner with solid tech, and I liked the characters. All of the key elements which enable me to enjoy a book. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars food for thought
This is food for thought, not many are prepared or even open to the concept that it will happen one day

4.0 out of 5 stars an engaging read
If post-apocalyptic fiction is your kind of thing, this is an entertaining and slightly frightening read. Well done! Looking forward to reading the next book in the series to see what happens to the characters.
