About the author
Ann Herrick is the award-winning author of several books and short stories for kids and teens. Included in the awards her books have won are the ALA Recommended Book for Reluctant Readers, IRA/CBC Children’s Choice and EPIC Best YA Novel Finalist.
Ann grew up in Connecticut, where she graduated from The Morgan School and Quinnipiac University. She now lives in Oregon with her husband, who was her high-school sweetheart. Their wonderful daughter is grown, married and gainfully employed, and has given Ann her only grand-dog, Puff, a bloodhound-Rottweiler-beagle mix, and eight grand-kitties. While she misses the East Coast, especially houses built before 1900, she enjoys the green valleys, fresh air and low humidity in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Ann loves cats, walking, the Oregon Ducks and working in her back yard. In addition to stories and books for children and young adults, Ann also writes copy for humorous and conventional greeting cards.

Award-winning author Ann Herrick grew up in Connecticut, where she graduated from The Morgan School and Quinnipiac University. Her books have received the ALA Recommended Book for Reluctant Readers Award, the IRA/CBC Children's Choice Award and EPPIE Young Adult Finalist Award.
The vast majority of Ann's books are HFN (Happily For Now, with the possibility of Happily Ever After. The characters are in their teens, after all, so Ever After would be a *really* long time.) Two books have positive endings, but not the standard HFN or HEA, but with those possibilities if the reader reads very carefully between the lines at the end of the story.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2014Once again Ann Herrick has skillfully penned a story that springs to life. Her portrayal of teen friendships, trials, love interests, and most of all, teen angst creates true-to-life characters that the reader will connect with. For me, this story rolled back the years and I found myself instantly inside Becca's thoughts and emotions. I especially related to Becca's wanting to skip over high school and emerge as an already-grown-up young adult. Ann Herrick has thrown roadblocks in Becca's path, however, and created plenty of challenges for her along the way. Enter Brent, the senior Becca is crushing on (although he already has a long-standing girlfriend) plus Colt, the guy she considers a good friend as they work together on school projects. Soon one complication gives way to the next, and Becca finds that life as a 14-year-old can offer more unexpected twists and turns than she ever expected.
I rate this book 5 stars! Readers of all ages will be delighted.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2014It has been too long since I've read a lighthearted teenage romance and Life, Love, and Surviving High School did not disappoint. I had read It's All in Your Mind before, and fell in love with it, so I had high hopes for this novel. Luckily, I loved it all the same.
Becca is a wonderful character that easily can connect to the reader. She's funny, quirky, and witty. Even when she doesn't make decisions I'd agree upon, they are realistic for the character and work well with the story. I think just about anyone can relate to the struggle of wanting to fit in, or even feeling left behind, especially in the age of just starting high school. I felt like a freshman all over again, with her distinct voice playing in my head.
The relationships between characters are very true to life, which really allows for the reader to feel like part of the story. Too many books focus on the romance and don't pay enough attention to the great friendships - which are likely to be more lasting anyway. In Life, Love, and Surviving High School, this isn't the case. Of course, the girls get distracted by their love interests and hopeful conquests (they're fourteen), but when it comes down to it, their friendship is important and lasting. Even Randi, who didn't seem to connect as much with Becca initially, had one of the best relationships with her in the end.
My favorite thing about Life, Love, and Surviving High School had to be the characters. I loved the characterization, it was absolutely fantastic. They all had unique personalities that they stayed true to, which lead to believable and entertaining figures. Even the more minor characters - like Becca's parents - had great moments that allowed them to be some of my favorite characters. Then, of course, there's Colt. (I still can't think of many things he can't do. Where are all these teenage boys who love to read in reality? Hiding underground?)
Although it is a quick read, Life, Love, and Surviving High School is entertaining and fun. Laughing and smiling half the time, I couldn't put it down until I reached the final page. I highly recommend rekindling with your inner teenage girl and getting a copy as soon as you can.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2014This was the second book by Ann Herrick that I've read. I absolutely loved this story. This was nothing like the millions of other high school related books I've read. This one was pretty much down to earth and an excellent read.
You have a dorky girl, Becca, that has somewhat pulled away from her friends. Not because she doesn't want their friendship but because she is still very much interested in riding bikes and her friends are more into boys.
When Colt waltzes into class with his work boots, John Deere shirt and says "Howdy," Becca automatically labels him as farmboy. From the start she wants to avoid him but it seems like the harder she tries the more they end up together, they are lab partners and quickly become study partners.
High school is tough. Becca wants to fit in but she just isn't interested in most of the activities her friends are. There is one boy that has her eye, unfortunately he has a girlfriend.
I give a thumbs up for Life Love and Surviving High School.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2016I've bought this for my nieces, and they really liked it, so I think I'm going to buy more of the author's books for them for Christmas.
