4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 427 ratings

A centuries-old mystery. A long-lost chronicle. An impossible cipher that archaeologist Angela Hunter must solve before evil reawakens.

Over 700 years ago, a thriving Native American civilization suddenly vanished, burying with it one of archaeology’s greatest mysteries. The secret remained hidden — until now.

Linguistics expert Dr. Angela Hunter has discovered a primitive codex, yet the Cahokian Mound Builders didn’t have a written language. As she deciphers the foreign symbols, Angela unravels clues that connect a mystical ritual and a vindictive curse. Determined to prevent her bitter rival from sabotaging her find, she has only days to complete the translation from centuries past…

At the height of the Aztec Empire, 12-year-old Tototl escapes a vengeful shaman to find a new life in the north. But something has followed him. As he struggles to conquer the destructive force, he’s desperate to warn future generations about the danger.

With an ancient evil threatening to emerge, Angela is in a race against time to piece together the puzzle before civilization as she knows it disappears forever.

If you enjoy action-packed mysteries about ancient civilizations, you'll love this adventure that takes you on a journey in two timelines: the Age of the Aztecs and a present-day dig site with archaeologist Angela Hunter. Discover what might have happened to the famous Cahokians…

Monks Mound at Cahokia Mounds

Chesterfield Valley archaeological dig site

Aztec Curse is an enjoyable read for those who like action-adventures and archaeological mysteries. The story, which takes place in two timelines, draws you in and has you hanging on until the very end!

Monks Mound is the largest in what remains of Cahokia Mounds. Over 700 years ago, a civilization thrived… then suddenly vanished. Aztec Curse is a fictionalized account of what could have happened.

When E.M. Stone learned about an archaeological discovery at a dig site in her hometown of Chesterfield, Missouri, it sparked the idea for her novel Aztec Curse.

Love author's style. I am 1/2 way thru the book and the story line moves forward in a way that you can see how ancient historical events influenced modern day descendants as well as average people. What seems bloodthirsty at first is explained by ancient religious views of the world, universe and how it all worked together. It is still emotionally chilling on a modern day level but on a strictly unemotional and educational level it becomes understandable. Certainly glad I did not live back then and a part of that culture!! It makes me wonder exactly who it was that first interpreted the gods' need for blood. Their priesthood seemed to be a collection of devious psychotic serial killers who had found a means of social acceptance and the power to instill fear in the populace.

Being from St. Louis, our book club chose to read Chronicle of the Mound Builders because of the ties to the St. Louis area (The Villages of the Mississippian's and Cahokia Mounds).

The book has two stories that intertwine with each other. The story begins with a detailed history of the Aztec's daily lives, how they lived and worked. A father and his son must flee for their lives, and find themselves on a long journey ending in the Villages of the Mississippian's and Cahokia Mound Builders. At the same time, the story takes you to modern-day St. Louis where Angela, and her team of archaeologists find a jar containing a secret code from the Mississippian era. The mystery increases as several people will wish to obtain possession of that ancient jar.

Elle Marie, also being from the St. Louis area, was kind enough to attend our book club meeting. We were thrilled to have a "published author" attend our meeting!!! Elle described to us the tremendous amount of research that went into writing this book. The book is well written and it's sometimes difficult to tell which parts of the book are true and which are fiction (and Elle is not sharing that information!!) It's a book that holds your interest and is difficult to put down!

...having no idea how to pronounce Aztec words. It was distracting at first, but the plot, the story, the historical fiction (???) that made wonderful sense more than made up for my little pronunciation problem.
How to explain the mysterious disappearance of the Mound Builders in so short a period of time? I think E.M. Stone’s inspired story and creative explanation is compelling. I believe in her magic.
If I wanted her to write a bit different ending, I would suggest leaving a little wiggle room so that the evil god, Pishoni,” could return. But she is a good enough plot twister she could do it if she wanted. I hope she wants.

Great Nahuatl. Really weird ending, but you know, sometimes it’s good to do something off the beaten path. Some violence, lots and lots of human sacrifice, because, well, I mean, Aztec culture is what it is and you’ve gotta appease Huitzilopochtli somehow. One mildly edgy scene but it wasn’t graphic. Lots more death than I was anticipating, but I learned so much about interpreting Nahuatl writing systems that I can say I genuinely enjoyed the read from an archaeological and archealinguistic perspective, against all my preconceptions. I learned dozens of new words in Aztec and now I can sound out like 3 total pictographs, which made me unreasonably proud of myself. That’s the real strength of the book— the clear excitement of translation of the Aztec hieroglyphics. It’s like old Egyptian in that you only draw the consonants, so sounding out the words can be tricky.

This book was overall an excellent and entertaining read. The story was quite engaging, and kept me wanting to read more and more as the story progressed. The characters’ personalities were realistic, and it felt like I could have known any one of them at some point in my life. The usage of imagery was detailed in such a way that I could easily imagine the setting that each part of the story took place. The story is told in two separate ages, yet both parts of the story are perfectly intertwined with each other in a way that really brought you into the lives of the characters.

I liked the book, didn't love it. Good plot, great research-phenomenal, I might say. Writing style convoluted at times. I'm a little conflicted because the book read like a first time author, but the story was fascinating. Just too much minutia, and it held the flow back at times. Don't let my review stop you from reading it though. If you like the subject matter, and a touch of archaeology, you'll enjoy the book.

What a ride! This story is very well written and comfortable to read. It’s presented on two distinct paths, one ancient and in the time frame that the root story takes place, the second follows the discovery of the artifacts and parallels the first in the present day. The reader has the enjoyment of watching the story unfold on two different levels. Both paths are riveting. Ms. Marie keeps your attention and takes you on a wild journey filled with a careful mixture of facts and fantasy so convincing it’s hard to tell one from the other. A big thumbs up! Can’t wait for a sequel.

Pretty good book, if you like archeological stories it’s good but covers a lot of concepts true fans and historians might find a little repetitive or basic knowledge. Print is tiny! Kept my attention enough.
