About the author
I am a former software developer, former actor, turned author of the Cal Rogan Mysteries. I was born in Oxford and now live in my beautiful adopted city, Vancouver. It has taken me many years and several books (either partial or failed) to learn the writers' craft. I invite you to enjoy the six Cal Rogan Mysteries. Six days a week you can see me at the Vancouver Public library hunched over my computer working on the next book in the series, as yet untitled.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2018Robert P. French returns with a third book in the Cal Rogan series. Cal Rogan, a former detective with the Vancouver Police Department and recovering heroin addict, is still fighting his demons in Lockstep. Rogan and former VPD detective, Nick Stammo, have partnered to start a Private Investigation Firm. Stammo is a paraplegic from an injury he obtained while working a case with Rogan when both were detectives for the VPD. Juggling three complex cases, Stammo delves into researcing and calling in favors. Cal finds himself back on the streets of Vancouver's drug district. Thus, the struggle continues with old demons. The complex cases, several characters, going from past to present makes this a most compelling read. Fast paced suspense at its best. Cal Rogan is a protagonist you would love to hate, but can't. I am a voracious reader, and bit of a book snob. Lockstep captured and held my attention from start to finish. If you enjoy Jack Reacher, Harry Bosch, and Eve Dallas, you will love Cal Rogan. I do not like spoilers, therefore, I try not to include them in my reviews. I highly recommend this book, you will not be disappointed. If you have not read the previous two books in the series, this can be read as a stand alone.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2022Overall a good book but it is a cliffhanger. I like series but not ones which are not stand alones.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2018I just recently discovered the Cal Rogan books. I ordered Junkie and as soon as I started reading it, I was hooked. Immediately ordered Oboe and Lockstep and, all of a sudden, three books finished. I just adore Cal Rogan. What an amazing character. He is hurt, haunted, confused, damaged. However, his need to see justice meted out and getting the bad guys off the streets is remarkable. He will just about anything to see that the victim gets their just due. Finished Lockstep yesterday and the ending blew me away. I know that the 4th book in the series is on the horizon but it cannot get here fast enough. I am dying to find out what happens just when things seem to be turning around for Cal. I will have to say that I did prefer when he was with the VPD. But I will overlook that because these books are just so good. Thank you Robert P. French for some wonderful and exciting stories and the time spent enjoying them. Please hurry up with Three. You keep writing them and I will keep reading them.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2022The ending was disappointing. After getting through the story that had too much inappropriate language…I expected a happier ending. I love Clive Cussler’s books, he is able to write great stories without offensive language and unnecessary sexual innuendos.
I think the story itself was excellent and I was kept guessing about who the players were! Could have been awesome.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2022At first, I found the writing style a bit formal for a thriller. But I liked the characters and the plot although complicated was easy ro follow. It took a bit to understand the back story, heroin addict? Former cop? PI?
Cal is half of a PI company, tasked to find a missing little girl. His partner is another former cop, confined to a wheelchair. Since Cal has a little daughter about the same age and in the same school, he's determined to bring the kidnappers to justice, even outside the law. He's estranged from his wife, although it seems they both want to
reconnect. What will he risk to take a drug dealing kidnapper off the street? Everything?
The plot wanders from politics to drug dealers to the super wealthy and the three eventually connect.
The non-ending is shocking. Sets the reader up for the next installment.
Yes, I'd read it, if it's available.
UPDATE: I forgot to mention that the Canadian author mocks the US for our Second Amendment passion. How ironic, because trying to resolve the kidnapping, he sneaks around the woods with a rifle.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2022Was a good read but wasn't edited.
Two mistakes near end. When Matt says Hello daddy dearest Stammo refers to two words his son said. It was three. Also near end Cal talks about Stammo's wife smelled of gin. Gin doesn't have an odor. Simple mistakes which should have been caught by editing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detective work at it's best
Cal Rogan takes the law into his own hands to save a little girl from paedophiles and comes off badly. You can't just murder someone because you don't like them even if it's the moral thing to do and getting yourself shot is going to leave DNA. Killing your best friend's son into the bargain is going to leave a bad taste.
