- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2019Thank you to BookSirens and the publisher - I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This story is a collection of short stories and as normal I did have a few that I really enjoyed but I had some that were okay. If you like Goosebumps this I think this is a collection of stories you will like.
I did enjoy the first story, "The house of Beech Street" - Becareful where you visit because you never know what you are going to bring home with you.
I also enjoyed "Hale Hallow Woods" - You never know the secrets of your families past. Sometimes things are not laid to rest until the game in finished.
Blackout - You never know what is hiding in the dark.
But my favorite by far is "Prom Date" I have always been sucker when it comes to urban legends and prom dates. This one Is my favorite so I wanted to go into more detail with it.
It was a trip to prom night went wrong. When a young girl see's her boyfriend is acting strange, she begins talking to his brother and trying to find out what is wrong and then one day while they are out to eat at Roller Grille, when Tyler seen his brother, Lane, holding a door open for another girl, Anilla, Shay's arch-enemy, Shay became very upset. She ask Lane's brother Tyler for help to get Lane back. Tyler did not want to help out until he found out that his brother had gave the car show tickets away to Anilla, that Tyler decided to make a plan with Shay to get Lane back.
There has been a what we would consider and urban legend about Johnny Tonnarro and his girlfriend Samantha running off a cliff at Yetter Point on the way to the prom. They say at night you can see the Ghost of Samantha in the fog and so Shay and Tyler decided to get back at Lane by performing a joke at Yetter Point by making Shay look like Samantha but what they did not know is that the story was on them when Samantha is drove off into the night screaming.
I really enjoyed this. If you enjoy small spine chillers as the book is called, this this one is one for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2017This is a great collection of spooky/ghost stories. Perfect for school children ages 8 and up.
The stories are fast paced and exciting. The stories are original and different from the typical ghost stories that I remember reading as a child. Each story has it's own characters and the detailed description of the locations opens up your imagination and makes it easy to “see” these locations in all their spookiness.
These stories would be excellent for reading at night at children's camping trips or Halloween parties!
I especially liked the stories Black Out and The Healer for their uniqueness and unexpected twists.
This book would be an excellent addition to any (or all) Elementary to Middle Grade School Libraries. I can see children having such fun enjoying reading this book.
I happened to read this book while on a “multi-family member” camping trip. When I finished the book I gave it to my younger sister who has 2 children just the perfect age for the book. I know they will enjoy reading this book.
To the author, Q L Pearce, Great work!
Review will be posted on amazon, goodreads and moonshineartspotblogspot
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2019Spine Chillers was definitely more enjoyable than I thought it was going to be. I love a good blend of paranormal and horror and Pearce doesn't disappoint when it comes to spooking her readers. Albeit this book is targeted at young readers, it's one that can be enjoyed by the whole family - not too scary for the young and not too cheesy for the old. Though there were some nice twists and turns in some of the stories, I was able to forsee the ending for a few of them, which hindered the element of surprise for me. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed the stories enough to feel a sense of satistifaction in how they played out.
There is a recurring theme in many of the stories of characters getting their just deserts, which was rather refreshing. Honestly, I would say there were three stories that stuck in my mind and that I thoroughly enjoyed and those were The House on Beech Street, Seaworthy and Prom Date.
Overall, these were some good tales. Not as scary as I would have liked them to be, but I liked the plot and characterisation for most of them. I also liked the creativity and imagination behind a few of the stories. I would recommend a good editor as I did notice numerous grammatical errors. It was an enjoyable read.
I received a free copy of this book, but I am voluntarily leaving a review.
