Fame and fortune beckoned. Jeff Diamond was a success, whatever that meant… Fans followed him everywhere, reporters and photographers hid around every corner and journalists recorded his many indiscretions. A whole different world to the downtrodden streets of Sydney’s south-west, where vices were satisfied by using people to one’s best advantage.
The star had more money than he could spend, his opinion suddenly counted, and the opportunities to feed his ever-hungry mind were plentiful. Yet the demons continued to torment him, no longer protected by the guardian angel who had been spirited away as soon as her family found out who Jeff Diamond was and where he had come from.
Suddenly the ambitious businessman and philanthropist found himself in the fight of his life. He would win Lynn’s heart by showing her father he was worthy, and by convincing his dream girl that they had something worth fighting for. Would she risk throwing her privileged lifestyle away for a man whose public persona depended on alcohol, drugs and a string of pretty girls?
Jeff had nothing to lose. The trappings of his new life held little significance until the soul-mates were reunited. This was where their life singular really began. Up until this point, there had only been playtime. Now they must step up and take responsibility. It was up to them.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
This is the third part in a serial which uses the universal themes of love, our fascination for celebrity and the relentless passage of time to increase awareness of mental illness and how we can all play a part in overcoming its challenges. As a long-standing sufferer of PTSD and its associated symptoms, the author seeks to reach as wide an audience as possible with this absorbing love story which de-stigmatises some of the world’s most prevalent social issues.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The two main characters, the protagonist and his soul-mate, have been with me since my teens. Since then, as my life took some alarming twists and turns, I have used these characters to explore how life’s ups and downs can be much more easily navigated with a solid understanding of ourselves and of other people. “We are all in a minority of one.”
“Lynn beckoned for her rock star seductively to come towards her into his old bedroom, pointing at his feet one at a time while playing with the hem of her skirt. Her spent supplicant duly indulged her flirtatious antics, pretending to fall under her spell, his breath rasping. Then, on her cue and yelling at the top of his voice, he took two steps forwards, span around and delivered a well-judged karate kick just to the left of the metal handle. The door flexed and shot open, revealing to the young woman another empty, half-lit room.
Not so for Jeff though. Dumbstruck, he dropped to his knees in the doorway, staring straight ahead. Lynn held her breath, initially fearful of the cataclysm that might manifest in her complex beast. Yet as uneasy seconds ticked loudly in her mind, her doubts began to recede. There was no angry outburst this time, nor even his trademarked roar of lament. She advanced a few short steps behind him and stood with her hands gently massaging his aching, concrete shoulders while he came to terms with what he had done and where he was.”
About the Author:
Lorraine Pestell was born in London and has had a successful career as an Information Technology professional in the UK, US, Europe, Singapore, and more recently Australia. She currently resides in Melbourne, Victoria.
Although working full-time, Lorraine is a passionate volunteer for several organisations, including serving on the Boards of non-profit organisations, being a mentor for The Smith Family’s iTrack program and providing project management assistance to The School Volunteer Program. She finds that volunteering time and energy to those less fortunate is an effective antidote to life-long depression and the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
The idea for “A Life Singular” originated when Lorraine was 14 years old, and the story has continued to develop in fits and starts since then, whenever time and life events permitted. However, three years ago, a new element of the plot triggered a sudden urge to complete the novel, and since then the story has evolved into six separate parts.
