What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I am a retired scientist and I wanted to encourage children to solve problems creatively with whatever limitation they have. The dust bunnies have no arms or legs; they move things by pinching them with their bodies. Each dust bunny is unique and they are named after the material they collect in their bodies.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
My wife and I would tease each other over the dust bunnies that we found. I would say that they were keeping the floors clean by collecting the dust for themselves.
One day the people carried a box into the house. This happened fairly often. The people would open the box and take what was inside and then they would put it somewhere and the dust bunnies would forget about it. This box was different. There was a black round flat thing inside about a foot in diameter and 2 inches tall. They put the round thing on the floor in the living room. Then something else came out of the box. It was like a house for the round thing but the house was only big enough for the roof to cover half the round thing. The dust bunnies though this was strange. The people plugged the house into the wall like they did with all their lights and sound making stuff. They put the black round thing into its house and then left.
Several hours later the dust bunnies had nearly forgotten about the black thing when they heard a strange humming noise. They looked out from under the refrigerator and stove and saw the black thing going across the floor.
“It’s alive!” several of the dust bunnies whispered at the same time.
“It’s dangerous! It is so close to the floor that it could run us over” whispered Linty.
“Worse than that look behind it” whispered Gritty.
“I don’t see anything” whispered Dusty.
“That‘s what wrong!” whispered Gritty fearfully. “There’s no dust behind it! It’s a dust eating monster!”
