What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I have to confess that another author inspired me to write this book. I wanted to learn about selling digital products on Sellfy.com and I could only find one book on the subject. It was, in my humble opinion, not written very well. I said to myself, “I could write a better book than this.” “Do it,” I answered back.
What is Sellfy?
SELLFY (pronounced sell-fie as in pie) IS A GREAT way for creative people — like authors, designers, developers, musicians, moviemakers, and more — to sell digital products online.
After you set up your store and upload your files, your digital products will be ready for sale. You can use links and Buy Now buttons to promote your products via social media, email, on your website or blog, or a combination of all.
You may even be invited to sell your products in the Sellfy Market.
This book is about one graphic designer’s experience— that’s me! — with opening a store on Sellfy. Follow the steps in this book, and you will have a store up and running in no time.

A somewhat bumpy story of how I got started selling digital products online.
I AM A GRAPHIC designer. In 2005, I discovered the joy of digital scrapbooking. It was not long before I started creating my own digital scrapbooking supplies. I (and my totally unbiased husband) thought they looked pretty good. So, of course, I decided that I should try to sell my products. After all, how hard could it be?
Keep in mind, that was 2005 — practically the dark ages for the little guy who wanted to swim in the deep end of the e-commerce pool. Especially when the little guy was on a little budget.
I have always been a bit of a geek. Heck, I had built a simple website or two, but setting up a complicated site with an e-commerce store that would support digital downloads? Brrrrr, it gave me the shivers.
Surely such a site HAD to be designed by a professional. So, I hired an agency to create one for me. It was a total nightmare! They promised I would be able to edit anything I wanted to after it was done but I couldn’t. The site was just a generic template that one of their designers developed to crank out websites.
To take credit cards, I had to buy an SSL certificate. To get an SSL certificate, I had to prove I was a real business. To prove I was a real business, I had to get an business occupation license. In no time at all, my checking account was $3,000+ lighter.
I managed to hack the so-called customizable website and learned a lot about HTML in the process. I must have done OK because I impressed the tech guy at the agency. He made a point of telling me they used my site (which wasn’t even close to their design anymore) as a demo whenever they made a presentation to a potential e-commerce client.
But, in my opinion, I still did not have a decent working site and I had not sold a single dollar’s worth of product. Needless to say, my adoring husband was not very happy, but he was very supportive. Thanks, honey!
I spent way too much time and money trying to make that site work. Eventually, the time came for me to stop banging my head against the wall and figure out how to get the site I wanted. After all, I knew what I wanted and what I wanted it to look like…
