Interview with Author – Skye Callahan

About Skye Callahan:
Skye Callahan is the bestselling author of Irrevocable a dark romance that ran away with her emotions and led her on a whole new writing journey. She enjoys exploring the darker sides of life through her fiction, whether through paranormal creatures or the depraved underbelly of human nature. Her other works include the follow up to Irrevocable, Bend Don’t Break, The Redline Series, The Fractured Legacy Series, and Bound and Unbroken.
Her love of reading and writing started at a young age and she has been blessed with a family that continues to support her dreams to be a full-time writer. She has lived in Ohio all of her life, where she enjoys taking long walks through cemeteries with her husband (when the insane Ohio weather permits), studying local history, and trying to make peace with the neighbor’s cats.

What inspires you to write?
I haven’t the foggiest idea where inspiration comes from. Loads of other writers have speculated on the concept, but I just write what my muses (characters) tell me. I usually don’t know where they came from or why they appeared, they’re just always there in vast supply.

Tell us about your writing process.
My process is a complete and utter mess: notes on every size and shape of paper, multiple word documents on both my laptop and tablet, and spreadsheets to attempt to keep track of the details.

I don’t work in a linear order from the story sense or the writing process sense. I write whatever scene I’m thinking about and put all the pieces together as I go, then I go back and smooth them out, add a little more, go back and add details, add some more, do revisions, add more, send it to betas, revise again, load it on my kindle to do a read-through, revise again, send it to my editor, revise more, send it to proofreaders, make corrections, and press publish.

It’s rather tedious, and by the time it’s published I’ve probably read over it a couple of dozen times. I also print and/or change the font and screen background color between each step, which helps the brain focus on the details rather than relying on memory.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
24 hours a day! My characters are constantly yammering away in my head about this or that. But, it’s more like a constant movie playing random scenes rather than feeling as if I’m interacting with them.

What advice would you give other writers?
Do it for yourself. If writing is what drives you then you won’t be able to live without it. It’s not always easy–especially when you’re managing other responsibilities–but it’s possible.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to self-publish because I want control over all of the aspects of my books. They’re my creation and my vision and I don’t want to let go of the reigns. However I also realize that it takes more than a single person to make a good piece of fiction and I rely heavily on trusted beta readers, editors, and fellow authors who advise me on how to improve my craft. The first thing new authors need to do is learn to take criticism, and roll with it even if you don’t agree with it. Not everyone will see your story the way you do.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think the future of book publishing will see continued growth and increased diversity. A lot of people are stepping outside of traditional boxes to give new life to fiction.
