Author Bio:
Jeffrey Bolden, is a walking contradiction. A young man with an old wisdom. A fiery spirit with a cool demeanor. Anything that is set in opposition can be used to describe him. Imagine a vampire’s seduction blended with a werewolf’s desire for the hunt for that is Jeffrey Bolden. He is seduction embodied, an irresistible character with an unspeakable evil in his dark eyes, yet walks through life as a lone wolf, growling in the face of death as he has done many times. A romantic with a cold heart. A happy depression. In essence, Jeffrey Bolden is conflict, the vessel for the war between good and evil and you know often times which side is winning simply by looking into his dark eyes.
What inspires you to write?
Music. In fact every book, every piece of prose, everything has been inspired by a song or an album. I connect to the sound of the music, the lyrics, and I allow the story of the song itself to blend in with the maniacal imagination hidden behind the Animal SnapBack. The combination of the two literally creates a story in itself and I just find myself telling the story.
Tell us about your writing process
Well it all depends. I’m not an outliner perse but I’ll write the book first and see where the story develops and see how the characters develop and see who my characters become. Sometimes as I write the first draft, the characters aren’t who I expected them to be and the story changes drastically because of that realization. Like for instance, I had one character who was supposed to be the main character’s boyfriend. He was the perfect guy but the main character was still interested in another character. At first I wanted to have it be a sort of animal like attraction but when I wrote a later chapter, I knew he was the abusive type because of the way he talked so in the second draft, I changed it up to where he was abusive the entire time. It’s sort of like just watching the world evolve into something beautiful and complete. I just let it develop as naturally as I can.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
That’s the only way my characters are created. In fact, I don’t just listen to my characters, I stalk them. I observe every twitch of their face, every emotion, I dive into them. I watch them from the moment they are born to the scene in which they play a part of. I learn every secret they hold, I become the best friend never seen, but always there. When they cry, I’m the one who rubs their backs when no other character is present. My characters are everything to me.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Well, as a person who has done both, self-publishing was the first thing I’ve ever done, well I wouldn’t call it self-publishing seeing as I went through Xlibris. I really didn’t have a good experience with them, so I just dismissed the idea of self-publishing altogether. So for a while, I went through a period of not being signed, just writing, and that’s when I started my Children of the Night series so maybe that was for the best because All We Know Is Falling got picked up because of my book, Book Of Soul. My self-published book kind of put me in the position to get a contract so I’d suggest that if you have a book that you feel should be out there, that you’re absolutely confident about, then put it out there yourself. If you’re not going to bet it all on yourself, what makes you think others are going to bet on you.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Well if Peguin is working openly with Author Solutions, I think there’s going to be a lot of people becoming authors because they think it’s easy and putting out trash books, poorly edited, not entertaining, and I just think that book publishing is going to go the way of the music industry. There’s going to be a Solja Boy of the author world and to those who take their craft seriously are going to be heartbroken looking at a once illustrious industry with sadness on their faces, wondering why didn’t we stop this.
