The Demons of Liberty Row

The novella is based on my steampunk comic BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY. It tells the story of how two of the main characters first met and their first case together. I wanted the cover to have a steampunk aesthetic with a hint of foreboding (and a demon) in the background with characters that resembled those in the comic. Ilsie did a terrific job in coming up with exactly what I wanted.

I agree about the comment above concerning the Papyrus font. It’s getting overused! Kudos for using a font that gives the book a historical vibe, plus a weight/gravity that says: solid, serious story within! And I agree that seeing an African-American front and center in steampunk is very welcomed! A well executed cover containing atmosphere, story, and presence.

A few comments about this cover. Firstly. it makes me nostalgic for my youth, playing a game called “Nightmare Creatures” in the late 1990s on my Playstation. The game took place in the dark alleyways of London full of creepy, crawlies. While this cover doesn’t have that, the imagery of the dark urban, turn of the century setting, eerily lit by the lantern, shrouded in the mysterious fog, evokes those old feelings and memories.
Having a black character front and centre on the cover is a provocative and progressive move too. In this day were fantasy/paranormal stories are often covered with young girls and handsome boys to get that tween demographic. Having Granville front and center slaps that in the face and makes for an interesting cover.
Also, thank you for not using papyrus typeface! This typeface is starting to pop up more and more and its worse than comic sans.
