Seems Like Old Times by Joanne Pence

JP_SLOT_cover_amz1
Growing up, Lisa Reynolds was expected to be “perfect” in everything she did from grades to career to the calibre of the men in her life. She denied her own nature, her own heart, to be what everyone else wanted her to be. But despite the perfection Lisa protrayed to outsiders, the state of her home life was ugly.

Tony Santos had been a major league baseball player but now finds his days of glory are gone. He’s back home to raise his son as a single dad. As a teenager, he loved Lisa, but to her, the poor son of a Mexican ranch hand could never be more than a friend. Yet, he was the one person who understood and accepted her as she truly was. He never forgot her, but also never forgave her.

When Lisa, who is now known as “Lee” Reynolds, nationally known TV news anchor, returns to her home town to sell her deceased mother’s home, she never expects to find Tony there.

Both of them have changed a lot. Yet, being with him, she finds that in her heart, it seems like old times….

Joanne Pence was born and raised in San Francisco and now makes her home in the foothills of Boise. She has been president of the Boise chapter of Sisters in Crime, a founder and board member of the Popular Fiction Association of Idaho, and founding member and current board member of the Idaho Writers Guild. Spirit3Conan’s mouth dropped open as his mind raced.
“Ye want me ta kill someone just ta get a night’s sleep?”
She began to protest when he held up his hand to silence her. “Do nae get me wrong, lass. I did nae say I would nae do it. I would probably kill me own maither right now if it meant I could sleep,” he muttered the last part under his breath.
“I did nae ask ye ta kill anyone! What I have in mind is more devious than that. I want this man ta die a thousand deaths!” She rubbed her hands together with glee as she saw Conan waiver.
“Then go and haunt him! He will pray for death once ye are through with him…I ken that I have!”
Her laughter quavered through the air.
“Forgive me, me laird, but it has ta be ye that accomplishes the task I ask of ye…nae other.”
His head snapped up as he eyed her suspiciously.
“Why me?”
“That is for me ta ken.”
Conan mulled over what she had told him thus far, and could find nothing objectionable about her proposal. He grunted to himself.
“So ye want me ta torture some man for…how long?”
“Did I say ‘torture’? Nay, ye will nae torture him in the literal sense.”
Frustrated, he snarled, “If nae ‘torture’…then what must I do?”

Why was this spirit haunting Conan McEwen? And how can he make her stop? Whatever her reasons…she was making his life a living hell! He was prepared to do anything to make her go away…even commit murder!

I was born in 1953 in a small town in Illinois to a broken home. As soon as I learned how to read I, basically, moved into our local library. I always enjoyed escaping to another world rather than live in mine. When I was old enough to be on my own I became a nomad and haven’t stopped traveling since.
I have been married for twenty-eight years to the same man although we’ve been together for thirty-three. He is my best friend and thoroughly understanding of my need to see what’s on the other side of the hill. I couldn’t ask for more. My three kids are grown and living their own lives now. So it’s just me and my hubby, two cats, two dogs, two parakeets and three hermit crabs living down here in Alabama.
I am new to the writing world. I’ve always escaped to someone else’s but I decided to try creating my own. My fondest wish is to take someone else out of their hectic life and let them visit the world I would have. Hopefully, they might wish to live there as well.
I chose Scotland as my favorite country simply because of their endless struggles against their enemies even knowing it was probably hopeless. They never gave up through it all…they persevered to hold on to their freedom at all cost.
When I researched my genealogy a few years back, I found through my grandparents a direct line to Robert The Bruce with a connecting line going back through King David to Malcolm III. I have traced these lines clear back to the Picts, Vikings and Ireland. These were all grandparents that I am very proud of. Since then I have continued researching the history and times that they lived in. I hope some of it reflects in my stories.
Anyway, I just want to say…welcome to my world.

Six-Gun Solution by Van Holt

This book is free on these days only – 06/17/2013 at midnight PST until 11:59 pm on 06/19/2013. If the dates are the same that means the book is free one day only.

Six-Gun-Solution-cover-finalThey called him a nester and after they killed his pa, he started calling himself Jim Nester. But what he needed was a six-gun solution.
A tough, mysterious bounty hunter with a score of his own to settle helped him hunt the killers down. But Jim Nester knew that someday he would have to come back and fight the ruthless cattleman who had hired them—and the cattleman’s army of hired gunhands.

Van Holt wrote his first western when he was in high school and sent it to a literary agent, who soon returned it, saying it was too long but he would try to sell it if Holt would cut out 16,000 words. Young Holt couldn’t bear to cut out any of his perfect western, so he threw it away and started writing another one.
A draft notice interrupted his plans to become the next Zane Grey or Louis L’Amour. A tour of duty as an MP stationed in South Korea was pretty much the usual MP stuff except for the time he nabbed a North Korean spy and had to talk the dimwitted desk sergeant out of letting the guy go. A briefcase stuffed with drawings of U.S. aircraft and the like only caused the overstuffed lifer behind the counter to rub his fat face, blink his bewildered eyes, and start eating a big candy bar to console himself. Imagine Van Holt’s surprise a few days later when he heard that same dumb sergeant telling a group of new admirers how he himself had caught the famous spy one day when he was on his way to the mess hall.
Holt says there hasn’t been too much excitement since he got out of the army, unless you count the time he was attacked by two mean young punks and shot one of them in the big toe. Holt believes what we need is punk control, not gun control.
After traveling all over the West and Southwest in an aging Pontiac, Van Holt got tired of traveling the day he rolled into Tucson and he has been there ever since, still dreaming of becoming the next Zane Grey or Louis L’Amour when he grows up. Or maybe the next great mystery writer. He likes to write mysteries when he’s not too busy writing westerns or trying to find out when they are going to start making Twinkies again.

The Last American Martyr by Tom Winton

This book is free on these days only – 06/17/2013 at midnight PST until 11:59 pm on 06/18/2013. If the dates are the same that means the book is free one day only.

Every now and then one small soul rises from the crowded depths of obscurity and causes the earth to wobble on its axis. This last happened in 2008 when an unemployed doorman stepped onto the worldwide stage in Stockholm and accepted The Nobel Prize for Literature.

In this me-me twenty-first century, Thomas Soles may very well be the last American martyr. This self-described “simple man” writes a book that is so powerful it brings back to life the all-but-dead international labor movement. The response to his thoughts and perceptions are astounding. Around the globe, from pole to pole, America to Zimbabwe, the footsteps of marching workers begin to tremor the earth. But not everyone is pleased.

There’s a tight-knit, elitist clique that is absolutely livid over the thoughts and ideals that fill the pages of Tom’s book. And when he and his wife, Elaina, return home from Sweden, they realize just how dangerous this profit-hungry mob can be.

Mortified by the horrible scene that awaits them inside their apartment, the Soles have no choice but to flee their longtime home. Hoping to find peace and anonymity, they bounce all over America in an RV. But they don’t find what they’re looking for. Instead they become moving targets. And everywhere they go they’re followed by a succession of life-threatening events.

Tom Winton was born and raised in New York City. During his working career, he has done everything from working on a railroad gang in the Colorado Rockies to driving a taxicab in Manhattan. He has also been a mailman, a salesman, an entrepreneur and more. He lives in Jensen Beach, Florida, with his wife Blanche and their ill-tempered, but loveable, Jack Russell terrier, Ginger. They spend part of their time in Carmel, Maine. Tom’s debut novel, Beyond Nostalgia, was released in February of 2011. This book has more than once been likened to such classics as Catcher in the Rye and To Kill a Mockingbird. Praised as “a 20th century Gone with the Wind,” Beyond Nostalgia has been on four different Amazon Bestseller lists. Mr. Winton’s second novel, The Last American Martyr, came out in August of 2011. It has been on six Bestseller lists, at the same time. His third novel, Four Days with Hemingway’s Ghost has been a bestseller as well. Just released in January, 2013 is his latest book, Within a Man’s Heart.

sapphireJimmy Parker is a typical high school student. Unpopular with the girls and picked on by the boys, he’s just trying to survive long enough to escape the tiny Pennsylvanian town of Knorr. With Jimmy and his friend, George, heading to the school dance, they expect nothing but the usual ritual humiliation from their peers. But when a girl in a brilliant blue dress enters their lives at the side of a lonely old bridge…everything changes.

Her name is Sapphire, and she is the most alluring girl that Jimmy has ever met. Yet, there is something strange about her; something different. Why has he never seen her at school? Why does she only want to meet up near the bridge? And why does everybody keep warning Jimmy to stay away from her?

Before long, Jimmy is plunged into a decades-old mystery. The town of Knorr has many secrets; some held by powerful men. Men that would do anything to keep them from getting out. Something dark happened one night in Knorr, and now Jimmy is a part of it whether he likes it or not.

And Sapphire holds the key to understanding it all.

Jimmy discovers that his bond with the mysterious girl creates a unique power between them. A power that bridges time, space, and even dimensions. It is the one thing that could save them both.

Because sometimes the most powerful force on Earth is love.

Multi-talented author, Bryan Alaspa, is a Chicago native who has dreamed of being an author since third grade when he first sat down at his mother’s typewriter and pounded out his first short story. It wasn’t very good, but it did give him the habit for writing that he has not been able to shake since.
