Which, aside from not even being a real planet, is the one place in the universe where chocolate is illegal. In between studying The Space-Faring Moron’s Guide to Common Science Fiction Plot Devices, falling for a rival captain’s boyfriend, and avoiding unnecessary time travel, Janet has a chance to save two worlds . . . or doom them to permanent chocolatelessness.

About the author
Social worker by day, space cadet by night. Distantly related to a gang of horse thieves.
Still trying to catch the 3-legged gremlins who steal socks out of my dryer. My main character's talent for accidentally destroying technology might be slightly autobiographical.
I write both serious and silly, science fiction and contemporary, YA and adult. Short stories, a novel, and working on a novel-in-short-stories. I'm not indecisive, I'm just Californian.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2024Don't even try to bring science into this sci-fantasy, it is pure romp. But with engaging characters and situations that need fixing, so our heroes try.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2023Perfect for when you need some light, fun reading but you don't want to re-read Adams or Pratchett. Just good fun.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2024I really enjoyed the cultural references and digs in this comedy. Reminiscent of The Orville TV show.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2020They've joined a very strange and select group, of which Poul Anderson and Gordon Dickson are the most recent authors of fame that I can think of. I count the Hoka stories, which were their main co-authoring experience, and Gordie's "Rex and Mr. Rejilla," and "Who Dares a Bulbur eat?" as some of the high points of that category.
In other words, welcome to left field, and curling as an interplanetary sport.

I really enjoyed this book. Just what I needed after a long day at work, some thing fun and entertaining to take me outside of myself. The Cosmic Turkey sure fit the bill. It’s great to know that Janet is out there protecting the universe is access to chocolate and coffee!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2020If you enjoy reading Douglas Adams' books, then you will relish reading this book. It has a very creative and fast moving plot. With every turn of the page, you never know where you will end up -- from Earth to Pluto and anywhere in between. And if you love chocolate and caffeine, this is book is absolutely for you!!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2020The Cosmic Turkey is a propulsive story told through a loving send-up of interplanetary science fiction. Although it contains many nods to the genre, you don't need to be a die hard fan to enjoy the humor. Highly recommended for those looking for a light, but intelligent diversion from the everyday grind.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2020A perfect escape as Janet and her crew take you on a fast-paced fun ride around the galaxy. Laugh out loud funny!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Three C’s of Comedy: Chocolate, Coffee, and Curling
I happened upon The Cosmic Turkey and, given that it’s one of my precepts in life to read anything relating to space fowl, I decided to give it a try. It wasn’t long before the other parents in the music school’s waiting area began side-eyeing me as I giggled like the Knox Harrington character from The Big Lebowski. I dare anyone to read the part where the main character takes the “Is He the Right Anthropoid for You?” quiz and not laugh. If you can do it, you probably deserve to have your humeri confiscated.
Like other great satires, The Cosmic Turkey verges on the wonderfully absurd. Janet Delane, an adorably awkward worker at an edible air factory, is sentenced to serve a term aboard the starship Turkey after being accused of destroying public property. Despite her lack of experience, she is appointed captain of the ship and tasked with rescuing a scientist, who is being held hostage on Pluto, the “Realest of the Real Planets.”
I can’t remember the last time a novel brought out so many laughs. The author effectively uses a number of comedic devices, and the book is a master class on the running gag. But there is also a nicely crafted story beneath the humour, where the various threads of the narrative all come together for a delightful ending.
Aside from the laughs, what I appreciated most about The Cosmic Turkey was its tone. In my opinion, much of today’s satire has become too angry and strident, jack hammering its message into the reader/viewer. This usually dampens the humour, even if I agree with the author’s view point. In contrast, The Cosmic Turkey’s social critiques are subtle and nicely woven into the fabric of the narrative, making for a fun, lighthearted read.
In short, I loved The Cosmic Turkey from beginning to end. You can enjoy it with chocolate and coffee, though for liability reasons I won’t recommend reading it while you curl. It will put a smile on your face, and I highly recommend it for every age group, from middle-graders on up.

5.0 out of 5 stars delightfully absurd
Cosmic Turkey does not take itself seriously, and is more enjoyable for that. Somewhat Star Trek-y setting and plenty of wonderfully absurd aliens and a classic unlikely, surprised, unwilling, and finally pretty plucky heroine. Looking forward to the next installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comedic romp through the cosmos
I LOVED everything about this book. This lighthearted sci-fi comedy was exactly what I didn't know I needed. Highly recommend.
