Conscripted: The First Book in the Military Sci-Fi Saga (The Battle for Allegra 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 71 ratings

Nowhere is ever truly safe.

The year is 2284 and wars are endemic across Coalition Space.

Matthew Campbell was a fisherman before the Coalition arrived. All he had to worry about was bringing in the day’s catch. Now he is in the middle of a war that has already killed tens of thousands.

Matthew makes all the wrong people angry and he finds himself in a "prime" spot on the frontlines.

...Without any traditional military training.

It seems that everything he learned in his tiny fishing village and from his time on a fishing boat will have to be enough to keep him alive. The question is, will that be enough?

No one thought of this alien invasion scenario. The Coalition figured the only possible invasion would come from the Alexandrian Republic, not somewhere far beyond the reaches of the Milky Way. Will these galactic invaders prevail, or will humanity stand its ground?

Join Matthew as he fights to save Allegra!

Conscripted is the first book in the short story military sci fi series The Battle for Allegra. Dive into this page-turner that is filled with thrilling sci-fi warfare. If you love reading about ordinary people getting thrown into extraordinary circumstances, 3rd person sci-fi, and alien invasions, Conscripted is the book for you!

This is the sci-fi military fiction novella you've been waiting for. If you loved Space: Above and Beyond, Starship Troopers, or Battlestar Galactica then you're sure to love The Battle for Allegra: Conscripted.

***

The Battle of Allegra is a short story series that is intended to be read in order! Each episode (which will be at least 10,000 words long) tells more of the story. Join in and read them today to see what befalls both Matthew and an entire planet which are both thrust into war they didn’t ask for.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

"The Battle for Allegra" takes place six years before my other series: "The Limit of Infinity"

I wrote this series because I wanted to make some high-quality short stories with striking covers and a great, compelling storyline. I also wanted something that would read like a TV show too, since some of my favorite science fiction works out there are shows. As such, these will be shorter and cover less per book, but there will be plenty of installments that eventually flesh out an entire story, world, and characters for us to all love.

(And, pro tip, I have omnibuses of this series that are 10 books (episodes) in one and those can save you some money!)

If you love alien invasions, military action, and plenty of fighting, then this is the series for you!
Each book is at least 10,000 words, which means that most people will be able to read it in about 1 to 2 hours.

Further,
For years, I've written short stories and novellas to keep myself entertained. Many of those who read my works over the years insisted that I publish them--especially with my shorter works.

This, paired with a story that had been nagging at me for a while, ended up motivating me to write and publish my first work in this series. before I knew it, I had three stories done in the series and I still had a lot of story left to tell! I wrote this series with a TV show in mind, hence my calling each individual book an "episode." In addition to this, I will be partitioning these episodes out into individual seasons as I write them. Those seasons will get you the best bang for your buck for reading, but you'll miss out on my cover art.

I truly hope you all enjoy these works, I know I have!

The way Caleb Fast writes is captivating from the beginning and you just want to keep reading and reading and not stop. It is both descriptive and has great world building (important for a fantasy) but also is interesting and has mystery/suspense throughout so that you aren't bored (you can tell there's more to the story than we know). I felt so bad toward the end that it was over I just wanted more. I received this novel through bookfunnel and this is a true and honest review

This short story did a good job of establishing a number of things - opening plot line, characters, plot friction, location, problematic situations, and more. There is a limited number of things an author can do in a short introductory story like this. From where I sit, the author accomplished three major goals I think he set out to do - provide a framework of the big picture, created a lead character you can care about, and give the reader motivation to start the series with Volume One.

If the books are as entertaining as the prequel, the series there are fourteen more after that to sink your teeth into.

A little disjointed. Going from a fishing/sailing ship. To a machine shop
Seeing his girl tortured. To not kicking the guys ass who done it. To him fighting all the big guys and winning there is to much inconsistency. Also there needs to be more story on the training. So far there's none at all. To me it needs work.

This book series was highly thought out and very well written. Sci-Fi is not usually my kind of thing, but when I stumbled across this in my search for a new read I couldn't wait to pick it up. And once I did I couldn't put it down! I finished them pretty quickly in one day and loved reading about the things Matthew and his friends go through fighting on Allegra.

I hesistate to give this 5 stars because the story feels rushed, and the main character is a bit of a Marty Stu (newbie soldier kicking all the big soldiers asses, and all the higher ups telling him how awesome he is). Other than that, very entertaining. Aptly described as an episode, as it's a very quick read. I finished it in a couple of hours, which is saying something because I'm a slow reader. But I will definitely be buying the next book.

Because it was short, more than a few things were skimmed which shouldn't have been. My favorite parts were the fight scenes. The details provided were excellent and drew me right into the action. It seems to be the classic underdog situation. We've got a kid fresh off the boat (literally - a fishing boat) who's taken off to fight a war. Matthew has a bit of a chip on his shoulder, angry at the world and ready to take on any and all comers. Needless to say, this attitude gets him in trouble. As if he didn't have enough problems already with the creatures who've invaded the plant out to destroy them all...

not that good of writing--to much dialog! Ordered by mistake.

This author needs to flesh out his storyline some more. Fill in the blanks like what kind of fighting he has done and what is driving him to do what he does. The characters were decently defined, but some back story on them would be better. Overall, this is a decent start for this author and I liked the novel.

The book has a power packed list of protagonists - Matthew & James are memorable. An exciting climax, leading to a new adventure for sure. Well done Caleb Fast. 4 Stars
