Review
This stunning,hyper-suspenseful mystery thriller, the third title in George A. Bernstein'sDetective Al Warner Suspense series, offers a psychotic serial killer and anintrepid Miami police detective. For much of the novel, there is no name pinnedon the killer because he has not yet been identified. He is leaving behindcorpses of stunning young women in their late teens or early 20s, each withbeautiful red or auburn hair, and each left gently posed, wearing a lovely promdresses. These bodies are turning up in the Miami area, but it soon becomesclear that the killer has been at this work in other places as well.
Mr. Bernsteindoes a fine job of describing Al's dedication and frustration. He portrays theinvestigator in part by exploring his relationship with Dr. Eva Guttenberg, apsychiatrist who is the love of his life. While Al's leadership characteristicsare demonstrated in his scenes with his police associations, his caring natureis revealed by his work with the Dade Boot Camp for Teens, a last-ditch effortto rescue troubled adolescents. Al is a rounded character indeed, but not toogood to be true.
The scenesfocusing on the killer, who is eventually discovered to be Ron Bachelor, aremagnetic. The author takes us a long way into the Ron's mind -- and the journeyis morbidly fascinating. Ron is some kind of genius, but his pain and obsessionturn a brilliant mind into a monster.
This is a richlydetailed, emotionally charged, high-tension thriller that will leave youexhausted but wanting more. And there is more. Mr. Bernstein, who lives in PalmBeach Gardens, FL, has gained quite a reputation via his superb ratings onAmazon. About the author
George was born and raised in Chicago and its suburbs, living there until the age of 39. He is now a retired corporate President, life-long fishing enthusiast, and a dedicated author. As a new author, George worked hard to improve his writing craft, attending many Writers Conferences and Writing Seminars to learn what makes really GREAT writing. That effort has produced 3 award-winning novels, as finalist and/or winners of several large writing contests. His first novel, "Trapped," was a winner at small, Indie publisher, TAG Publisher's, "Next Great American Novel" contest, and they subsequently published the novel, becoming an Amazon Top 100 novel.
As research for his 2nd novel, "A 3rd Time to Die," George actually did hypnotic Past Life Regression with an associate of famed guru, Dr. Brian Weiss. George went into that adventure just to see the mechanics of how Regression worked, but after finding 9 "past lives," he came out a believer. Things he discovered about several of those existences are things that have had a pronounced impact on his current life.
George then began his Detective Al Warner novels, a character and plot driven series with Warner likened to Patterson's Alex Cross by many readers. He is frequently hailed as a wordsmith and creator of surprise endings.
George is also a world-class fly-fisherman, having held a dozen IGFA World Records. He's an expert at fly-fishing for pike & musky, and wrote the highly regarded book, "Toothy Critters Love Flies" on that sport, as well. Every year he hosts a "Fly-fishing for Pike" week at far-north Canadian lodges, where he teaches casting, techniques and fly-trying.
George now live in sunny Florida, and splits his time between writing, fishing & fine cabinet making (his 3-car garage is a "Cabinet Shop," and he's built 28 mahogany raised-panel and French doors, all the cabinets, and a fine cherry-wood entertainment center for his house). But George's greatest love right now is creating riveting fiction, all of which has mostly 5* & 4* reviews.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2024I'm not really into serial killer books, however this one when it snags you you can't quit you have to keep going even though it may take you more than one day. I felt for the girls that were murdered I had tears and I cringed and yeah the whole idea of it was just horrifying but those types are out there and oh my God it's scary.
Very well written. An impressive 90+ chapters.
This book is available on Amazon, Kindle Unlimited, & Audible.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2017Miami is home to a lot of people. Most of them are good, hardworking people just trying to make their way through life. Unfortunately there are a few bad apples and these are the few that Homicide Detective Al Warner has to deal with on a daily basis. Keeping the people of Miami safe and the bad guys behind bars is his mission in life.
Unfortunately for Warner and his city, there is a new serial killer on the loose. He has been dubbed the Prom Dress Killer because after he murders the young women, he dresses them up in fancy vintage prom dresses and leaves them in a place where they will be found. Warner pulls the case because he has the reputation of finding this elusive breed of murderer, bringing them to justice and in the process bringing closure to the families of the victims.
Warner is hot on the trail of the maniac that seems to be targeting young, attractive redheads. He is pulling out all of the stops to catch him before another woman is murdered. Unfortunately for Warner, the Prom Dress Killer is always one step – and one body – ahead of the cop that desperately wants to stop the killings.
The reader is reminded several times in the book just how good Warner is at his job. Almost to the point of me wanting to say “I got it!”. I understood that Warner is a hard-boiled, old fashioned cop that has solved multiple serial killings and put the bad guys where they belong. I really didn’t need that many reminders. Warner’s dialog was great, in the moment and moved the story forward. But I got really tired of every word ending in “ing” was written as “in’ ”. A few would have been ok, but to me it got in the way of the story.
The serial killer himself is well written. Everything is not as it seems to be, so kudos to Bernstein for crafting the character and situations that are downright page turning. I held my breath a few times wanting to tell the red haired women that are in the story not to be so stupid, but just like good horror movies, they didn’t listen.
Bernstein’s plot was solid. There were a few red herrings, which were really great plot twists. But sometimes the way in which the story was told actually got in the way of the plot. Sometimes overuse of a word or two can put the reader off. When I read “akimbo” at least three times in the first 100 pages, I wanted to suggest a thesaurus.
If you are a fan of Philip Marlow, there are shadows of this kind of PI in The Prom Dress Killer, you might enjoy this series. This is the third book in the Detective Al Warner suspense novels and the first one I’ve read. Bernstein had a top 100 novel on Amazon with his first book Trapped (not part of the Warner series).

- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2017Once more, author George Bernstein weaves his magical words into a mystery thriller that tops them all. In the Prom Dress Killer, Detective All Warner searches for an elusive killer who is drenched in evil and out to murder young women.
Sound like the usual scenario? Not this time. Bernstein never does anything in the usual way, and that’s what makes his novels exceptional. He writes with a nice easy style building the characters, descriptions, narrative, and dialogue into a detective story that reads like an art form.
Without giving the story away the reader is taken through unanticipated twists and turns, constantly seeking resolution on every page but instead finds more conflict for Detective Warner to overcome—and that’s what mystery stories are all about.
This was a book I could not put down and I’m looking forward to more novels by this talented author. Highly recommended.
