Amazon.com Review

Some people say Anna Karenina is the single greatest novel ever written, which makes about as much sense to me as trying to determine the world's greatest color. But there is no doubt that Anna Karenina, generally considered Tolstoy's best book, is definitely one ripping great read. Anna, miserable in her loveless marriage, does the barely thinkable and succumbs to her desires for the dashing Vronsky. I don't want to give away the ending, but I will say that 19th-century Russia doesn't take well to that sort of thing.

One of the best books I have ever read.

Typical Tolstoy story of complex characters involved in intertwined episodes of drama, romance and intrigue. Very well developed character descriptions. Hard to follow all the names with some characters having more than one name, a formal name and a casual name. A lot of jumping back and forth between different dramas happening at the same time. The wide differences between the royalty or privileged class and the serf during 19th Century Russia is vividly etched in the book.

Only 24 chapters in, but I am hooked. Tolstoy has an incredible ability to use dialogue to capture the essence of individual characters. His descriptions are detailed to the right degree to put you squarely in the actual location.

    Great book.

Leo Tolstoy’s classic story of doomed love is one of the most admired novels in world literature. Generations of readers have been enthralled by his magnificent heroine, the unhappily married Anna Karenina, and her tragic affair with dashing Count Vronsky.
In their world frivolous liaisons are commonplace, but Anna and Vronsky’s consuming passion makes them a target for scorn and leads to Anna’s increasing isolation. The heartbreaking trajectory of their relationship contrasts sharply with the colorful swirl of friends and family members who surround them, especially the newlyweds Kitty and Levin, who forge a touching bond as they struggle to make a life together. Anna Karenina is a masterpiece not only because of the unforgettable woman at its core and the stark drama of her fate, but also because it explores and illuminates the deepest questions about how to live a fulfilled life.
“I’ve always loved you, and when you love someone, you love the whole person, just as he or she is, and not as you would like them to be.”
I spent my entire summer trying to get through this and finally got the time to finish it this week. I kept hoping it would get better but it didn’t. I hate to say but the movie was actually better.
The book was so long and I had a hard time following the Russian, the characters and the story line. I just don’t have much to say about this book it was sad and hard to get through but I’m glad I can check it off my list.
I rate this book a 2 out of 5 stars.

Reading this slowly, deliberately. It seems as though Tolstoy is painting a masterpiece, giving value to every light, every shadow, weaving brilliantly through the contours, I am in no hurry to finish this enjoyment.
Suggest that you take time to memorize each character's name and it's variations as you go along, it can, at least to me, become a bit confusing, but then I'm not good at remembering names.
