Not since Charles Bronson's famous vigilante movie character have I had such empathy for a killer. The killer in this book is out for revenge and has set herself up as judge, jury and executioner. I can't divulge the reasons without giving away too much of the plot, nor can I say why I sympathize with her. Suffice it to say that Merry first lost her son when he was overdosed on drugs and then her husband died from a heart attack.

Alone and grieving, as only a mother and widow can, Merry sets out to seek her own brand of justice.

Exactly what does this grieving (to the point of insanity) widow do? She is all alone in the world, except for her best friend and her overly-protective brother. She needs privacy to do what she must do, so when she is ordered to take an extended leave from her court-room duties, it works right into her plans.

Why does the judge order her to take built-up "vacation time?" What does her cop brother do to try to help her? Does he suspect her of killing drug-dealers who are popping up dead all over the place? What is going on around them in the drug world and why is she so suspicious of another cop? Is her brother all he is supposed to be? And why won't he accept the love of Merry's best friend when she is obviously crazy about him... and he is definitely interested?

But most important, is Merry the vigilante... or could it be her brother and the other cop?

In her usual suspenseful, yet direct, way, Fontainne answers these questions and more with perfect pacing and mind-boggling description. I still shiver...

Although Fontainne identifies the killer from the beginning, there are so many surprises, it blew my mind each time a new one popped up. Fine writing, great pacing and realistic dialogue mark this book as a quality book, a face-paced, thrilling read.

I am in agreement with other reviewers who think this author can't get any better... until reading the next book. It is an odd happening, but each time I read a new book by Fontainne, I think THIS ONE IS THE BEST. Odd, but true...

I highly recommend this book to all who really enjoy complex, psychological thrillers with lots of action.

Emotional, compelling with a bittersweet end. This story has several twists throughout. A young man and his father are destroyed by drugs. Their widowed mother takes vengeance upon the dealers and opens up a family secret.

The story is painful yet well done and easily understandable. Believable characters with entertaining dialogue.

"Too drunk to drive to get more beer, yet not trashed enough to pass out, Mitch retrieved the bottle of whiskey from the back of the cabinet."

No desire to re-read this story. I am interested in other works by this author.

I have read all of Ashley Fontainne’s books and I sincerely believe this is the best one so far. Merry was a suffering widow. She and her husband, Harold, had one son, Joshua, whom they dearly loved and then when in high school her son began using hard drugs, and although he went to rehab several times, he could never seem to get over the addiction, until one day he died from an overdose. Then at his funeral, his father, Harold, because of the stress and sorrow he felt, died from a heart attack at the funeral. Merry clerked for a Superior Court judge and in time, she decided she would judge those drug dealers who were active, especially the ones who sold to her son, and if she found them guilty, she would execute them in a manner in which they would suffer. Hence, she was jury, judge and executioner. She had stayed in good shape. She exercised and had practiced several physical systems and was in good shape. She purchased a wig and wore clothes that masked who she was and she always killed at night. When she stalked her target to where he was the most vulnerable, nothing moved except her eyes, which focused on her target. No remorse. No regret. Sentencing commenced immediately. Merry hunted per her internal court's orders. Merry had a brother, Derek, who was a policeman, a girlfriend who could never have conceived that Merry was capable of this, and there were others involved in the story, who may start out as one actor in the plot, but later becomes someone else and often even with another purpose. It is a story of many twists and turns and keeps the reader glued to the story until it ends. I recommend this story for readers who enjoy dark mysteries of vengeance, betrayal, grief and anger.

I purchased a preordered copy and am happy to give this review.

I've read several Ashley Fontainne books at this point and while they were all a little dark, I think this is the darkest one I've read so far. Unlike the first two Rememdium books (Tainted Cure and Tainted Reality) and Suicide Lake, this one doesn't have any romance in it (I don't count Derek and Debbie's night of passion, particularly as we aren't actually there for it). That being said, Fontainne's writing was great as always. Each time I didn't think things could get worse or darker, they did. She managed to pack several surprises into the book as well. The ONLY reason this book is getting three stars from me instead of four was just that it was darker than I'd normally choose to listen to. Outside of that, it was an excellent book. Well written and with an interesting and engaging story line. Based on the four Fontainne books I have read so far (including this one), I will definitely be reading more in the future!
