- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2016A very well thought out, well written, intellectual book. I don't know the last time I read short non-fiction, so this was definitely a change of genre for me. I didn't know what to expect. When I say intellectual, I mean it as a good thing. In no way did the author write in an arrogant way, but rather intelligence rang true through every single chapter. I spent time looking up words, which was awesome. I like to be challenged as a reader, and I like to learn. I like that I am smarter now. This was a book I ended up talking to several people about because I agreed with some of the thinking, was heartbroken over the religious characters, and grieved over the loss without hope.
Halfway through the book, I didn't know what to think. I won't give away any of the plots or spoil the book for you, but at times I felt a lack of hope after I finished a story, and that is not how I personally am. I also had a conflict of beliefs/thinking as I stood in the shoes of some of the characters. However, it is good to read and challenge my own beliefs and remember how I personally deal with suffering and loss, and that not everyone responds/reacts as I do. As I finished the book, there were several other stories that seemed to even out the tone of the book which I greatly appreciated. Meaning, all wasn't lost in hopelessness. I enjoyed how several of the stories crossed paths, and that these stories were realistic and took on many people from many walks of life.
My bottom line from this book? Sorrow and hardship happen, but your attitude and response to sorrow and hardship is everything. I'll leave you with an excerpt from chapter "Father".
"It's just not the way things are. But how we react to what happens to us does have a reason; how we receive and respond to what happens does have a purpose. We give reason to what happens through our own actions. Our response is what gives things purpose."
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 20184/5 stars for lyrical writing and a heartfelt analysis of humanity
I met Dan on Twitter around this time last year, and it was a true joy to experience his book. In the midst of its mystery and tragedy, there is something overwhelmingly peaceful about this collection of short stories and poems. Each piece is a powerful combination of lyrical writing, a heartfelt analysis of humanity and a quiet message that leaves you to draw your own conclusions.
Perhaps my favorite short story in the book is “Expect Dragons”, which amplifies Buri’s empathy for humankind in seemingly inconsequential words such as:
“You’ll learn that in this life, in this world, people think they need to label everything. They need everyone to fit into a nice little box, no matter how restrictive or damaging that box is. For them, everything is right or wrong, black or white. People are married or single, kings or poor, Republicans or Democrats. People will try to label you as a king, or dumb, or athletic, or any number of things. But I want you to remember this—you are not a label. You are not something that people can put into a box so they can better fit you into their worldview. Never forget that….”
Each sorrowful mystery is packed with tear-jerking lines like these, giving readers the impression that they are part of a conversation in which they can be truly heard and understood. I felt deeply for Buri’s characters and appreciated their individual struggles. It’s refreshing to find this level of honesty in any book. To find it in a collection of stories is extra special.
In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed the themes of hope, identity and love that Pieces Like Pottery presents. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys short stories that pack a punch.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2016Truthfully I don't find many books that get recommended on Social Media to be very good. In fact, over the years I have tended to become a bit convinced of the fact that majority are not. That's why I was so surprised that when I took a chance to read Dan's book - I really couldn't believe what a gem had been sitting there. Good Short Stories are very difficult to write. Very Difficult. They have to be very precise and engaging in such a small space that many writers, even well recognized ones, fail at the task. Dan has not.
The first time I read it through, there were several stories I connected with immediately (Expect Dragons, Dies Cum Anxieta, and Twenty-Two), but when Dan later explained to me that the stories follow the themes of the Sorrowful Mysteries in the Catholic Tradition of the rosary (I'm afraid I'm a very lapsed Catholic) well then the book took on a completely different meaning for me. I even recommended this book to my mother and sisters (they are not lapsed Catholics) and they all found the stories very moving and very easy to connect with.
In the end - this is very quality storytelling. Dan is able to get readers to connect and empathize with each tale and in a way that is enjoyable and powerful at the same time. I really enjoyed this book and in doing so - Dan has restored my belief that great writing can be found all around us and in the most unlikely places.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Meditation
I enjoyed this collection of short stories with connecting themes such as loss. It was a powerful read. The story that had the most impact on me was Expect Dragons. There were so many themes such as the power of education, literature, the important role of teachers not just in the education system, but in society itself. Also, how one person can make a difference, and how the actions of one person can reverberate and inspire change in others. I was uplifted by this book. I highly recommend it to anyone. It was a beautiful meditation on ideas that are very much relevant today. Writing is an unforgettable form of art. This book illustrates that. Enjoy the journey.
