The Cliffhouse Haunting Kindle Edition
THE CLIFFHOUSE HAUNTING...
When the Blue Lady Walks...
Since 1887, the Cliffhouse Lodge has been famous for its luxurious accommodations, fine dining … and its ghosts. Overlooking Blue Lady Lake, nestled among tall pines, Cliffhouse has just been renovated by its owners, Teddy and Adam Bellamy, and their daughter, Sara.
Cliffhouse has not always been a place of rest and respite, though. Over the years it has served many vices, from rum-running to prostitution -- and although the cat house has been replaced by a miniature golf course and carousel, Cliffhouse retains its dark history; darkest during the Roaring Twenties, when a serial killer called the Bodice Ripper terrorized the town, and a phantom, the Blue Lady, was said to walk when murder was imminent.
Death Walks With Her...
Now, there’s a new killer on the loose, and the Blue Lady sightings have returned. The Bellamys are losing maids, and guests are being tormented by disembodied whispers, wet phantom footprints, and the blood-chilling shrieks of mad laughter that echo through the halls of Cliffhouse in the dead of night. The little mountain town of Cliffside is the perfect hunting ground for a serial killer … and the Blue Lady. Police Chief Jackson Ballou has bodies piling up, and between the murders and the mysteries, he can hardly pursue his romance with Polly Owen. And Sara Bellamy may lose her true love before they even have their first kiss.
***
A new sound threaded into the babble of the brook. Soft, feminine, and distant, like a woman singing from some far-off place, so quiet that he thought he imagined it at first, but it grew until it mingled with the stream’s murmurs. It was the most beautiful music Adam had ever heard and it chilled him beyond measure.
Keeping his gaze low, he slowly turned to face the lobby. The smell of the lake had not diminished. The song continued, and as he brought his eyes up, his body froze and his breath hitched.
Standing near the brook, smiling at him from over her shoulder, the Blue Lady looked coy, playful. Her hair and dress swam around her like living things.
Do you believe in me now? Her lips never moved.
Adam blinked hard against the vision.
The Blue Lady turned her head away and continued her slow trek, leaving wet footprints behind her even though her feet never touched the ground. As the distance between them grew, the song faded. When she neared the stone wall, she turned to him, smiled once more, moved to a window and disappeared beyond the glass. As she did, her mad laughter shrieked through the lobby.
“She’s real,” Adam whispered to himself. “She’s real, she’s real, oh my God, she’s real.”

About the authors
I started writing at an early age, mostly science fiction, but when I was 11 I found Shirley Jackson's Haunting of Hill House and the course was set. Nowadays, my haunting research for novels has brought me another career -- investigating for people with problems. Life imitates art.
See the bio page on my website for more in-depth and somewhat true details.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2015This was exactly what I had hoped a "straight horror" story from Thorne and Cross would be. I have been a Tamara Thorne fan since she wrote as Chris Curry in 1991. As years passed, I made a bee-line for the T section at Books-a-Million every time I went in to look for new Thorne treats. Along comes Facebook, I "friend" Tamara, meet Alistair, am privileged to read some of his yet-unpublished work and then watch in amusement as those two begin collaborating. I could NOT wait for this book to come out. I was sure it would be good, and it was very, very, very good! They share a sense of humor that give this book the charm of all TT horror and weave a great story seamlessly. I kept trying to see if I could spot who wrote what and failed. They are that good.
The story itself sets up as many Thorne books do, in California in a small tourist town. This town is host to Blue Lady Lake and the historic Cliffhouse Lodge. The lodge is home to the Bellamys; Adam, Teddy, their daughter Sara and honorary aunt Maisy. The Lodge and its surrounds seem idyllic as the story begins at the end of summer celebration of Labor Day. Unfortunately, a killer is celebrating a new partnership as the Blue Lady joins him. A mix of horror and humor, often at the same time (you simply must meet Dr. Siechert!), The Cliffhouse Haunting is well worth the investment of time and money for lovers of literate, witty horror.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2024This was a fairly good story, though, like all ghost stories, the end was somewhat anticlimactic. The atmosphere was good, and it kept me engaged. This is an accomplishment as I am an Agatha Christie fan. The plot wasn’t as good, but the characters were more interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2024Tamara Thorne and Alistair Cross have officially risen to the top of my favorite authors list. Everything they touch is pure gold. I literally howled at the twist!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2017I have had several of Thorne's books for over a decade, and I enjoy them and re-read them periodically. They are part of my go-to library for trusted escapism and entertainment. I'd rather read than watch TV or movies.
I found this book and excitedly purchased it. The premise is a good one, and I did finish the book. Of course, I always finish books. I'm not sorry that I read it, but it was overly long and detailed to the point of dragging in many places. I also found the mention of Theo Pelinore bizarre. She died at the end of a book written more than a decade ago: one without cell phones (which this book had).
All in all, it was a decent read, but it won't make my go-to library.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2021Thorne and Cross create some of the most memorable characters I've ever read. This book had a little bit of everything with an extra helping of gruesome humor. I may never eat a bratwurst the same way again! Definitely check out their other collaborations as well as their solo works- I'm a big fan of both as their talent for great characters grows each time.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2022[Snack-Size Review] The Cliffhouse Haunting, by Tamara Thorne & Alistair Cross
What It’s About: The Cliffhouse Inn is a beautiful tourist destination, in an idyllic small town. Except maybe for the serial killer, and the evil spirits hanging around.
A Word From The Nerd: Duckies, I have read a few by Ms. Thorne & Mr. Cross, and they have become two of my favorite authors, for both their individual works and collaborations. The Cliffhouse Haunting was pretty good, but it felt somewhat underdeveloped compared to their newer projects. Although the overall plot was engaging, and the pacing and setting were delightful, some of the characters felt very flat, almost to the point of caricature. The tone was all over the place - it seemed that the authors were going for a slapstick, sitcom-ish vibe at times, while other sections were wonderfully atmospheric, dark, and spooky. That twist on the last page, however, flibbered my gibbets HARD.
The Nerd’s Rating: FOUR HAPPY NEURONS (and absolutely no sausage ever again).
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2020I have to say I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this, I was familiar with Alistair’s solo work but this is the first collaboration book I’ve read and I WANT MORE!! Tamara and Alistair together are a superb duo who just amplify the suspense and the laughter and they had me laugh-screaming before I even knew that was a noise I could make! I would gladly check in to Cliffhouse for the colorful cast of characters that never cease to keep you on your toes! Every drop of this book was as delicious as the spring water served inside it, I strongly recommend it with a side of Dr. Siechert “special “ Leberwurst! You better eat up before the Blue Lady gets ya!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2022The premise of this story was well done. It was a page turner. Great read to take on your vacation to the woods at your favorite lake. Several memorable characters kept my interest going, especially Dr. Siechert. Suspense was maintained throughout the story. there were humorous moments as well as being gross. All in all, this was a damn good piece of escapist literature. makes me want to read more tales from Thorne & Cross. The formatting and construction of the book was professionally done. My only complaint is that a few places the authors dragged out *details* more than they should have, otherwise the project was tightly done.
