- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2014This was an absolutely enchanting story between Samual and Lucas. Because Samual was quite the big mouth he spends most of his time trying to get out of the mess he has made. But with a little help from some unseen forces, he has some unexpected help. I thought this story was wonderful. I love stories like this, that are fanciful and enchanting. Especially around this time of year, you can almost always find a little Christmas magic. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2014All Samuel wants for his birthday slash Christmas this year is for his boyfriend Lucas to openly love him. Having recently lost his mother, Lucas doesn’t want his first Christmas after her death with his father to be marred with telling him the truth about his sexuality. But Sam is tired of being Lucas’s secret and he wants to tell everyone the truth about what Lucas means to him, how much he loves him. After a pretty nasty fight Sam out’s Lucas not only to his father, but to his friends as well in a jealous, worded rampage. Now he faces his birthday and Christmas alone, without his lover, who is fit to be tied for being Outed for the Holiday.
A short little Christmas time story about thinking before you speak. Sam doesn’t intend to hurt the man he loves, he just wants Lucas to be open and honest about their relationship. He doesn’t think about the consequences of his actions, and almost looses Lucas in the aftermath of his verbal diarrhea. I really liked that Mac Nichol was able to give a pretty decent history and current story for both these young men in so few pages. My only issue with the story was the attempt to include a bit of a paranormal aspect and how that played out. It didn’t quite mesh for me, but overall it was a fun story, perfect for the season!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2014This book just didn't do it for me. It just seemed mediocre and not too interesting. All of the public drama between the two main characters sounded like little children squabbling on the playground.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2015A splendid short with heady romance and a hint of the supernatural. A thoroughly enjoyable holiday read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2021This was definitely an angsty Christmas love story between two men who have a falling out when one opens his mouth without checking to see who could hear what he said. Sam has a sixth sense and can see things. Lucas is gay, but not out. Can these two men who love each other get back together or will Lucas hold a grudge against the man he loves? Will his mother be able to change the course of Sam's hurtful words? Excellent story.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2015What Susan Mac Nicol read is not a pleasure? With Out for the Holidays, she raises the bar for angst-filled romances that get ironed out just in time for the holidays.
We have two young men who truly love each other. The only problem is, one is out and proud, the other is gay. Frustration from keeping the truth slipping out unleashes itself one bright day and the beans are spilled. In public. In front of dad and friends. The relationship turns rocky and it looks like Christmas is not going to be merry this year.
Sam shoves the proverbial foot right into his mouth and chokes. Lucas is not wanting to talk to him and it's breaking both young men's hearts. An unexpected help is extended to help Sam out of his predicament and the magic of Christmas seems to be in the horizon once more.
This is a short little read filled with the stupidity of two young men who have the feels and not much logic. The unexpected help is from someone more logical and magical. In the spirit of Christmas, this short little read makes one realize, it's best not to speak without first thinking about what to say. Especially when the feels are overwhelming.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2017Wonderfully sweet Christmas themed story which I read in one sitting. It was a story which showed that you really should be careful what you say as you never know who is listening.
Samuel is having a secret relationship with Lucas who is afraid of coming out to his father, but Samuel accident ‘outs’ him to more than just his father.
The way he handled it was wrong, but he wants to make it right and in his attempts to do it, he actually makes things worse.
There is a slight supernatural twist to the story, but it adds another dimension to the tale and gives up a very memorable dream sequence. The sort of dream you really don’t want to wake up from.
If you’re looking for something short, sweet and with wonderful characters and writing that will transport you to the places in the book through the great characterisation and descriptive power, then this is the book for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2016I thought this book was okay, the characters were okay and the story was okay. I didn't love it and probably won't re-read it. For a short story I guess I was expecting more and didn't get it. I have liked other books by this Author so this will not deter me from reading more from her. Some might love this, so give it a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars This a great short story
This a great short story. Even though it is only a short read, Author Susan Mac Nicol told me everything I needed to know, building a perfect picture of the characters.
Samuel has a loud personality, he is gay and proud to shout about it. He can come across as being quite selfish but not meaning to be. He was brought up by his brother, Christian after losing their parents when he was only a teenager. Him and his brother do seem to be close even though Christian had to take on the roll as a father.
Lucas is the complete opposite to Samuel, meaning he is gay but it is kept as a secret, he doesn't want anyone to know, he never found the right time to tell his parents and now with his mother gone, having passed away just months ago, he doesn't want to hurt his father, or shatter his dreams of having grandchildren.
Samuel is in love with Lucas and wants everyone to know. You can imagine the conflict going on in Lucas's head. Still to this day there are people out there who are homophobic and can be very nasty about it. Will Lucas's father be one of those people, or will he accept his son the way he is?
I really enjoyed this short read and I am looking forward to reading a full length novel by this Author.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... has crafted a charming and heartwarming story of young love between the brash
Susan Mac Nicol has crafted a charming and heartwarming story of young love between the brash, out and proud Samuel and his secret boyfriend, the shy, closeted Lucas. When Samuel loudly and very explicitly outs Lucas to his father, and "half the town", in his brothers bookshop, it appears their love story has come to an embarrassing and abrupt end. With the unexpected help of a little enchantment and some mischievous spirits Samuel sets out to regain Lucas' trust and love in time for his happy ever after birthday and Christmas. A perfect read for this time of year that will leave you smiling and wholly satisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas story with edge.
Liked this story although the wording was very posh to me. Loved both characters and that dream sequence was so hot I thought my kindle would melt!
Seeing ghosts and feeling a presence must be something you get used to.
