Review

Fans of Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove and sweet romances will enjoy this story about Jessica, a young girl from the dusty fields of West Texas. After joining government service, she goes to Washington, followed by travels to Africa, Germany, and Paris, before she falls in love and settles in California.

This is a charming story of finding your purpose in life, sharing true friendships, and ultimately, discovering love. Passport to Happiness is an endearing novella that tugs at the heart strings. Well done.

A really good book about the American dream.
I can certainly recommend.
Interesting from start to finish.

From the Author

Passport to Happiness holds a special place in my heart. This book (like most of mine) have truths sprinkled through-out.  As a military spouse of 20 plus years, you could say I've done some traveling. This is a true coming of age story. Jessica starts out as a young girl and by the end of the story she's in her mid twenties. I hope you enjoy it and look forward to hearing from you. Passport to Happiness by Debbie White is a wonderful romantic story.
The main character, Jessica, is very lovely and sympathetic. She lived with her mom in a hot and dusty little town. The relationship between single mother and her daughter is one of the strongest themes of this novel. For me it was a captivating reading, as I was raised in very similar situation. It is interesting that often kids of single parents do much better than kids of married parents. It was a study of hundreds of teenagers that showed single parents were friendlier to their kids than were married parents. Any way in spite of financial difficulties I was a happy child, the same as this lovely character Jessica.
Thank you Debbie White for this sweet and captivating story!

"Passport to Happiness" is a clean and wholesome coming of age story. There's a unique style to the prose that took some getting used to. "Passport to Happiness" is written as if someone is sitting down with you in a living room with tea and telling you a long story. It was jolting in the way when one reads a past tense novel and shifts to one in present tense. After the first couple of chapters, you get over it. In fact, once I got used to it, it really reminded me of the style I'd see in movies when I was younger like "NeverEnding Story" and the "Princess Bride" where the tale is actually being told by one of the characters. So in that sense, it did fit the tone of this novel given the story is about a girl born in 1956.

As for the story, it was sweet, enjoyable, and entertaining in an educational way. Historical events are seamlessly incorporated and as Jessica, a sweet girl from Texas, travels the world, we get to learn about new places and customs. The romance is touching and the ending gave me happy fuzzies. I don't read many books that give me happy fuzzies, so that was a refreshing change I didn't even know I needed!

The time setting is beautiful, it made my imagination work especially that the author added familiar events which happened that year. I loved that the main character went to travel to different countries and met different people. The countries she went to I bet are just lovely.

Jessica is a very loving character, I admire the love she has for her mother and how dear her friends are to her. I am glad this story ended happily for her.

I enjoyed reading this book, it made me want to read the Salty Dog. Best book to read during your free time. Good read!

It was an enjoyable story about a girl following her dreams of traveling to many places around the world. She encountered many people throughout her travels, some of whom shaped her life in a big way and would become lifelong friends. Others were in her life for a season as she worked on one project or another.

All in all, it was an uplifting story about how one can rise above the limits placed on him/her by society to go on and realize dreams others never thought would be possible.

My personal taste of books is typically nonfiction books that teach life lessons. I typically stay away from novels because I feel like there just for entertainment. I will admit that I thought I only was going to receive entertainment from this book, however, this book is filled with a lot of life lessons that anyone can use in their day-to-day life. If you love reading fiction novels then you will definitely enjoy reading this book.

Not as good as "Salty Dog". Ending was a bit of a let down. Characters seemed to be somewhat disoriented and all over the place. Story line/plot was not very clear and at the reader's left wondering, "Is that all there is?" This may have been Ms. White's first book, not sure of the sequence. If so, it could be forgiven its flaws on that basis. If it was a sequel to "Salty Dog", then it failed miserably.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A VOYAGE OF SELF-DISCOVERY
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 7, 2014
Jessica grows up in the 60s and 70s in a small rural Texan town and, however tied to her mother, feels a burning desire to travel and escape the confines of her birthplace, as does Josh, her fellow-Texan. They go off to train and work for the State Department, with the aim of working in consulates abroad. With her new-found friend, Birdie, she goes off to work in Uganda. Later she is assigned to Germany. This story is very smoothly written, and the reader is easily able to empathize with the central character, and her observations and experiences, let alone her aims and ambitions. It is essentially a story about the search for identity and commitment in life; Jessica is engaged on a journey of self-fulfillment which brings, in its wake, episodes of romance, travel and a delirious joy at the wonders of the world. We can't help but share in this wonder, and the occasional upset and disappointment, as this is the authentic stuff of life. Not to be missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Passport to Happiness...

Somewhere between a family saga and a tender romance, this story carries you along as Jessica comes of age and leaves her home to explore her rites of passage. The locations are glorious, the characters intimate, and the writing flows beautifully. An easy book to get lost in, maybe in front of a log fire with a glass of red wine for company. Reading it was a really nice experience.
