- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2015Ex-policeman, Sam Carlisle, is on rocky ground. Rebounding from losing his wife and daughter, he stumbles from one job to the next always fighting off having a drink or getting too close to any female offering a hint of interest in him. He goes out with two friends, and they end up having too much to drink. He goes into the alley for fresh air and stumbles over a dying man. “Help me find,” the man whispers to Sam with his last breath. A dying man's final request is disturbing, and Sam intends to find out what he meant. Sam just wrapped up a case, and has no time to get involved before starting work on an investigation that pays handsomely. He tries to be logical yet is haunted by the man struggling to speak those three words. Sam can’t separate his emotions and feels obligated to fulfill a dying mans wish. What did he mean? Was he looking for the person who killed him? Did he lose something valuable or was he looking for someone? We meet Sam’s colleagues and friends. A few like him more than they should, Alice is sweet, and her flirting scares Sam. The reader wants them to find a relationship, but Sam is still hurting. Diego and Stuart want to help while Detective Robbins shows distaste for Sam’s methods. The two men don’t like or trust each other. From the onset it appears hopeless the two men will ever be able to work together. Author Joseph leads us into an alley and keeps us there. The path is a feeder tube of mystery and the dark side. The criminals get in Sam’s way and brushing them off with his determination takes the reader to an unexpected conclusion. What does Roger Carpenter, Kenny Swain or Jimmy Edwards have in common? We know they’re evil, but it there more? That’s part of the puzzle, and it slowly unfolds page after page for Sam. Just when you think poor Sam has lost his way, the case takes a new direction pushing to a surprise ending. Easy read. Enjoy characters and a strong plot will keep you involved. Loved it. I highly recommend Searching for Hope.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2014Quaint whodunit that takes place in the community of Newgate, England and its environs, as PI Sam Carlisle stumbles upon a dying man in the alley behind a pub. Intrigued by the man's final words, he takes on a case that the police couldn't less about, and although he has virtually nothing to go on, he digs and snoops until he get his investigation rolling. The story keeps a nice pace, with some interesting characters on both sides of the law. Well-told in the first-person, we learn that Sam is quite a guy and has an intuitive sense about this case, as his investigative techniques make for some interesting twists. A nice balance of both action and dialogue, and just enough diversions make for an enjoyable mystery that occurs during the English winter. Likeable main character will have me reading more in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2018The lead is very believable as is the fact he can be bested.
A variety of characters but a most useless addition of a, maybe, love interest?
I felt the story lacked a compelling sense of interest in how it would end, though the ending had a surprise.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2014What can I say? I loved this story as well. I now possess all three books with Sam in them and all three were really good. I liked the action and everything. In fact, I loved Sam. He is such a great main character and it was great he survived to the end of all three stories.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2016This is a story about Sam who is leaving a bar one night and finds a dying man in the alley. The man says words that won't leave Sam. He decides to find out about the man, his name, his past, how he ended up in the alley, why he said those words, and what really happened to him.
This book kept me reading with all the twists and turns. If you want a good book, you won't go wrong with this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2016I really felt bad for the guy that was murdered, such a heartbreaking life. The author did a great job making me care for the characters in this mystery and lead us along with some twist and turns which kept the story fast paced and interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2014A story line that rocketed along, a hero with rough edges and a nice little twist at the end. I enjoyed the book, couldn't put it down. Yes it read like a TV script and there was a lot of violence, which usually I avoid, but the book was well written and drew me in. A good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2017I really enjoyed this story and the main character. Plenty of action, suspense, plot twists and characters to fuel emotions. The ending really was a surprise. Looking forward to reading more Sam Carlisle stories.
