Majestic Hollow Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 75 ratings

Joe isn’t thrilled about a lot of things - being in eighth grade, having an older brother who is the football playing apple of his dad’s eye, or having a Van Helsing-obsessed little brother that he gets stuck babysitting way too often. That’s probably why he is so intrigued by Cole, a runaway who lives alone…in the cemetery. It’s not a coincidence that Cole befriends Joe and misfit, Vidonia Finkle. They will learn that their pasts are connected in a way that will help them save their town, Majestic Hollow, from the monsters who want to invade it!

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A lively, riveting monster tale that's fit for children and adults alike." -Kirkus Reviews

"Veil's vividly imaginative tale is an entertaining romp through monster lore, with vampires, werewolves and witches all making appearances. It reads as a love letter to the classic horror stories, refreshed for a modern young audience with plenty of folklore and a few cloves of garlic. There's plenty of room for a sequel or two here, and they would be surely welcomed."

The main reason I totally enjoyed this book is because of the supernatural aspect of it. Witches, wizards, werewolves, vampires, all this crazy awesome stuff that I'm a little bias about because I love it! Second would have to be the writing style. The author pushes things along really quickly, going straight from one thing to the other. Even though it might seem straightforward and just strung together for older teens or adults, I think this is perfect for kids like 14 and under, because it keeps them engaged and focused on the story. It's not like it holds back description or important details or anything, just that it sums it up quickly and efficiently for the reader. I love the way that this is presented!

One of my FAVOURITE things about this book is Joey's (/Joe/Joseph) thought process. We have the older brother who constantly has to look out for Samuel, the baby of the family. He treats him with disdain most of the time, some annoyance as well, because even though deep down all older siblings recognize that they love their little bros/sis', they're never going to admit it. Then we have the younger brother side of him, who can't stand his older brother Cameron because he's cast such a big shadow that Joey feels he can never get out of it. But he also can't help but up to Cameron, for the same reason. And as a result of younger bro Joey and older bro Joey, there is a Joey who wants to do something crazy, different, to leave his family, so that he isn't stuck as "average Joe". This side of him is always pretty sarcastic, sometimes sad and depressed. But all of these things are what a teen in his position would feel, and I think a lot of readers who have been/are in his situation are grabbed into the book because they can easily relate.

Even though I think Joey's mind is awesome, Cole is by far my favourite character :)

So the storyline is totally cool, I love how it all plays out, Joey has an amazing mind, Cole is an impressively complex character, and this book is enjoyable for those of all ages. Thumbs up!

I'll be the first to admit that I was a sucker for Harry Potter growing up, as well as dozens of other fantasy and science fiction thrillers. While Majestic Hollow may have had a few rough spots and some plot holes that could have been filled, it certainly appealed to that old, innocent wonderment that I remember so well. Veil does a good job of creating a story that is magical but not unbelievable, and characters that readers can engage with without seeming condescending or "watering down" the book for younger readers. Granted, I am no longer in the target audience for this book, but I can see the definite worth and the talent embodied by the author. It also read very quickly, yet you didn't want to skim or skip words. In so many YA books, there is useless descriptions and excessive exposition that holds little bearing on the story itself, almost like space-fillers for a less than packed plot. However, Veil includes enough twists, turns, and well-developed characters to avoid those space-filling passages, keeping the pace steady and interest-piquing. Belzore was probably my favorite character, although Vi also had an eccentric and sincere tone to her that made her accessible. I had some reservations with the progression of the plot and certain leaps/conclusions that were made without proper support, but that can happen in any book, and younger readers will surely forgive them. Overall, nicely done!

The YA horror and supernatural genre is definitely on the rise, and Veil shows that she deserves to be a part of those growing ranks just as much as anyone else receiving praise in that style. I didn't know precisely what level of book this is, but I have dabbled in the occasional YA literature as fodder between other books, and this one popped into my recommended books based on earlier purchases. Although I found it a bit plotted out and predictable, I think it was very well-written and the plot was sound. There were plenty of interesting characters that would enthrall kids that are interested in this genre, and enough surprises that would hold attention spans. The strong personalities of young heroes always makes for inspiring reading (a la Harry Potter) and the classic good vs. evil mixed with some personal revelations and mystery may be a classic framework, but Veil does a nice job of reinventing the wheel, so to speak. I would recommend this to any parent looking to find their child their new favorite book, and for anyone who is young at heart that likes a bit of light reading and fun diversion, you also won't be disappointed. Majestic Hollow will strike a chord with anyone who likes reading about things that go bump in the night!
