Colorworld Kindle Edition
But something goes wrong, and when Wendy wakes up, she learns that someone is dead and it was her skin that did it.
Unable to touch people for fear of hurting them, Wendy is on the hunt for answers. Did they mean to make her a weapon, or something else entirely? That's when she finds out she's not the only one; superhuman abilities are real.
Gabe, who works with the company responsible, feels badly about what happened and offers his help. Together they learn that Wendy was targeted for a specific reason, and it has nothing to do with her death touch.

About the author
As one gets older, it becomes increasingly difficult to summate life into a short biographical blurb. There have been far too many experiences in the last fifteen years since I first put pen to page that have shaped who I am as a person and as a writer. And far too many before that. I could tell you where I was born (North Carolina). I could tell you where I've lived (in practically every state when I lived in an RV for two years). I could tell you where I live now (Iowa). But none of those things really tells you who I am, and I'm assuming that's why you're here, reading this.
Writing offers many enjoyments, one of which is the story, which comes out of me regularly to my surprise, sometimes to my embarrassment, and often to my delight. The characters, the places, the plots; they're all discoveries, and I enjoy every moment of them. But that wouldn't be enough to keep me. I'm the mother of seven children and wife to a man who never stops innovating and moving. The time I have for simple delights is limited. Of all the things I could choose to do with my "spare time", why write?
There's a greater, more spirit-stretching reason. Francis Bacon touches upon this truth: "Writing maketh an exact man." Or in my case, woman. I write because it helps me discover who I really was, who I really am, and who I really will be. Discovering that there is more to ourselves than we first thought, that we have more inside us than we had fathomed, is an addicting state of being. And that's who I am, who I strive to be every day: someone on the cusp of discovery.
Writing isn't an option. It's a way of life for me. Like religion.
So when you read my books, you are witnessing the journey. You're watching me discover something about myself and my place in the world. I hope you'll stick around. I have so much more to learn.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2015Rachel Kelly's "Colorworld" is the story of Wendy, a young woman who's dealing with a lot - college, a job, an empty bank account, supporting and raising her younger brother, coping with the fairly recent death of her mother. She's also got something of a gift - her senses are extraordinarily keen, and she can sense what other people are feeling when she touches them. When she sees a ad offering money for volunteers for experimental "hypno-touch" treatments to cure allergies and other ailments, she doesn't really believe it'll work, but she can't turn down the cash. She goes in skeptical, and wakes up a day later, to learn that her senses are far improved, she can sense emotions from across the room...and when she touches anyone else with her bare skin, they die.
If that sounds a little bit like the origin of Rogue in X-Men, well, Wendy and her younger brother think so, too. And if the research institute Wendy goes to, to try and understand what's happened to her, and hopefully to control or reverse it, reminds you of Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, that's no accident either. The author describes Colorworld and its sequels as "superhero books set in the real world" and she does a fantastic job with that premise.
The book is well written, the characters are complex and well-developed, the ideas the author plays with are compelling, and there are twists and turns aplenty along the way. The story is told from Wendy's first-person perspective, so we're in her head the whole time as her abilities blossom, as she falls in love, and we see everything that her newly expanded senses reveal in beautiful detail.
I highly recommend this book, and I'm already onto Teleworld (book 2 in the series).
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2014The best part of the book is that at the end you just want more. I love the characters, I love the plot, and I really dig the colorworld! Now I am a big fantasy reader, so I've read my fair share of "magic in the real world" sort of stories, but this ranks way up there. I was less excited about the romance aspect, but it's it didn't make me put it down, which is really saying something. I loved the intrigue from the beginning and there were even a few twists I didn't see coming!
If you are going to read this though, be sure to clear your schedule. It's a fast ride and it's not easy to put down once you get going. I'm excited to see the sequel just came out too!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2014While this book is not flawless, it was a surprisingly interesting, quick read.I say "surprisingly" because I am not an avid reader of romance or science fiction. While the beginning takes a few pages to pique my interest, after page 30 or so, it is engaging--enthralling perhaps. The expression of emotion and senses is vividly acute and relatable.
Kelly provides likable characters and breathes live into them through their own independent voices. Some of the vehicles such as the x-men connection and the dancing emotion analogies were excessive, in my opinion, but otherwise the encounters were lively and uncontrived. She does an excellent job describing the indescribable--energy fields, life forces, unrealized emotion, unnatural movement, anxiety attacks...
The balance of an unbelievable set of circumstances cemented in the real world is fascinating. It dabbles with the line between fantasy and reality, supernatural and natural, leaving the reader to believe that part of her story is quite possible. I think she has shown a valiant effort maintaining that balance. I can say that one of the difficulties of the series to come might be maintaining the “this” world quality of the characters while making them true to their supernatural capabilities.
I am quite interested to see the characters, and the author, settle into themselves in the books to come. Well done and worth the reada.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2013I usually have to give books patience because they're hard to start but this one had my attention right from the get go and continued to enrapture me as the plot progressed. I really could not put the book down, its a good thing we were going on a long road trip right after it was purchased. I felt like I could easily be one of the characters and it triggered some strong emotions towards the characters.
I finished the book thinking that I could go out and find someone to help me find the Colorworld. That was how real the book felt to me.
Great new author to watch for!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2015Finally a book that places the world of pseudoscience and medicine into a real world of today. This is the story of an empath faced with the stengthening of her powers to dangerous levels and the betrayal of her mentor laying the ground work for an amazing adventure/detective fantasy series. What is amazing about this series is that it takes place in the here and now in California and blends the world of alternative medicine with the ability of seemingly normal people into a web of super powers and intrigue. Often people have experience this so-called Colorworld in everyday life when everything is heightened- this takes this phenomenon one step further into the range of super powers that eventually drain the characters by also at the same time forcing congenital diseases to to a point of decimating their bodies. We follow the heroine through this book and the sequels "Teleworld" and Lumaworld as she struggles with the good and the evil forces in all of us to find a cure using other characters to unravel the mystery of the phenomenon and her past. The race against time and the heroic struggles of the characters to come to terms with their heightened powers and find the cure for the ensuing diseases ravages. No dystopian future here, but a plausible here and now story of seemingly ordinary persons with acute sensitivities trying to find their place, past and future in today's world.
