- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2013I loved this book! It is set in South Africa around the turn of the 19th century and gives a fascinating picture of the enormously profitable ostrich feather trade and how ostrich farms were managed. It tells the story of the growth of a young man, his strength of will and purpose allowing him to build great success against the odds. It tells too of the greed and love of power which finally destroys him. The action also takes in some scenes of the Boer War, but the main interest (apart from the ostriches - fascinating in themselves) is the inter-action of the strong personalities involved.
The author clearly has extensive knowledge and love of his subject and has crafted his book with care. It is really un-put-down-able, it kept me up far too late, as I had to keep reading to find out what happened next. A great story, well told.
