A Second Chance in Paradise Kindle Edition
Long Island salesman Sonny Raines has had it. He’s sick and tired of living in a world where wrong always wins over right. Then, on his thirty-ninth birthday, when he loses his job and comes home to the most devastating shock of his life, that’s it. He’s dropping out.
With nothing left to lose, and little in his pocket, Sonny chucks it all and drives his aging van fifteen-hundred miles to the lower reaches of the Florida Keys. All he wants is to get over his recent losses and simplify his hectic life, and that’s exactly what he thinks he’s doing when he settles on a paradisiacal speck of an island known as Wrecker’s Key. While surrounded by the warm aquamarine waters of two tropical oceans, he not only falls in love with the key but also establishes a close bond with the free-spirited locals who call it home.
But all isn’t blue skies, swaying palms, and coconut oil on Wrecker’s Key. There’s trouble wafting in the warm breezes that caress the island. Although Sonny certainly isn’t looking for romance, he finds himself falling for his next door neighbor. Ex-model Julie Albright just may be the kindest, most beautiful woman to ever grace his eyes, but there’s a snag. She has a small physical flaw that, no matter how hard he tries, Sonny can’t overlook. And his feelings are no secret to Julie. She can read them, and they weigh as heavy on her heart as they do on his. Then things get even worse. One night, under the cover of darkness, danger drifts up the deep, silent currents from the lower keys—serious danger—life and death danger. And Sonny Raines finds himself right in the middle of it.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2014With many novels on my Kindle waiting to be read, this morning I wasn’t quite sure which one was going to be the next. I sometimes go back to the reviews of these books to help make this decision. To be honest it was the several one star comments of how shallow the main character was made me want to see what the hoopla was all about. Here is a main character, Sonny Raines, who on his birthday gets fed up with his dead-end job and quits on the spot only to go home early and find the love of his life is unfaithful. As soon as the divorce is finalized he moves from Long Island to the Florida Keys. Yes, I guess the main character is a bit shallow when he finds a connection with a gorgeous, very personable woman, but then questions being able to continue the relationship because of a relatively slight handicap … even to himself he is shallow and hates himself for it. As we look deeper he is still not over his wife, dreaming of her constantly, remembering the places they visited on their honeymoon, even thinking he sees her at times. In my opinion this slight handicap has become only an excuse which he doesn’t even admit to himself. Not only did I find this a very enjoyable read I really liked the idea of being able to dig deeper into a character myself, not having the author tell me everything every step of the way.
Bravo, Tom Winton!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2014A Second Chance In Paradise was a very good book. Although this book was fiction, it's content is what can happen in a person's life. The story line was good and kept you wanting to see what happens next. Also, lessons are learned , like a person shouldn't be judged by a handicap. Another good lesson is be true to your friends. This book was probably written just to read for enjoyment. The teacher in, always looks for something to associate with real life situations. Yes, this was a good book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2014I've never read a book where I enjoyed the writing style and then didn't as often as I did with this one. The premise was good, but didn't translate well for me. There was one huge loose end that never got addressed...Buster' s truck. Bothersome. This was just an okay read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2023Tom Winton's book A Second Chance in Paradise was the first story of his I have read, and my reading in one sitting tells me I will be reading his
other stories as well.
This story highlights the Keys of Florida. I lived on the mainland in Lake Placid, a town that grew from a development. And my in-laws lived in the keys.
This story was fast-paced and had an overall tenor being more than a mystery, suspense, or love theme. It has an outlook of good and evil in our society and which line in the sand is drawn.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2014I really enjoyed this book very much, especially the beginning. I applaud the author for being bold enough to point out the settle prejudices that people have against physically challenged people. The story also touches on what some real estate developers are willing to do for money. I wish the book had stayed on a more personal course but I love a good ending. Worth a read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2014Ladies, this is not your sweet romantic typical novel. This is a book about a scorned man that moves to 'paradise' but doesn't want anything romantic. It is very detailed from a man's perspective. However, those details are not at all about romance. It's how a man thinks daily - not at all about women. The novel details more about the man's adventures than his short romance. I honestly was beyond bored reading this bc I was wanting a real romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2014Sonny is a hero easy to like until he meets a woman in Florida, but he redeems himself. This was a really good story, and I loved the ending. The characters are very realistic down to their speech, and the landscape is described so a reader can visualize it. Great details. There are a few mistakes, one being your for you're, but the story itself is a five-star read. The female Sonny meets in Florida has a disability. Can Sonny learn to live with it, or will he keep running to escape it? Good guys vs. bad ones with action. Loved the part about the boat and the storm. A few words are repeated. The author has written a powerful story though, and I really enjoyed this one. Glad I found it.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2019Great book. I didn't like the main character early on but he seems to change ang grow as the story progresses. And a great ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
Another great story by this author. It brings us deep into the ultimate betrayal of a marriage partner, and a man's journey back to life and trust in a new relationship. Of course there is the 'fishing scene' and life in the Keys, so clearly described you can picture and feel the culture of the people. Loved the book. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Second Chance in Paradise
A good fast flowing novel. Sonny Raines a salesman quites his job and finds out his wife is having an affair so packs up an walks out. He goes to Key West to start a new life, far from his prevoious life and with no commitments. Sonny finds himself becoming involved in the people around him some of whom are not the politically correct people they seem and troubel rears its ugly head. Despite not wanting to get involved Sonny cannot in all good concience help himself and things come to a head involving danger to the small community.
It all comes to a head and Sonny finds himself in a dangerous position. with a love interest and a problem he needs to overcome this novel makes for a good enjoyable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wish I could be there!
This might almost be a tourist brochure for the Florida Keys, with it's rich descriptions of the peace and beauty of this chain of little islands. Certainly it left me wishing I could take a trip there! It probably isn't the best of Tom Winton's impressive body of work (I thought it was let down by some inconsistencies in character development) but it was still a story well told with a smooth and captivating flow of words leading to a satisfying conclusion.
