The Raven (Illustrated) (Top Five Classics Book 14) Kindle Edition
• All 25 illustrations by Gustave Doré for Harper & Brothers' 1884 edition
• An informative Introduction
• A detailed Biography of Edgar Allan Poe
• The illustrated version and text-only version of the full poem
No poem has ever received the kind of immediate and overwhelming response that Poe's "The Raven" did when it first appeared in the New York Evening Mirror on January 29, 1845. It made Poe an overnight sensation (though his great fame never brought him much wealth) and the poem, a powerfully haunting elegy to lost love, remains one of the most beloved and recognizable verses in the English language. The illustrations that accompany this Top Five Classics edition are reproductions of the renowned French artist Gustave Doré's steel-plate engravings created for Harper & Brothers' 1884 release of THE RAVEN. It would be Doré's last commission as he died shortly after completing the 25 illustrations in January 1883. His illustrations would become famous in their own right, evoking as they do the lyrical and mystical air of Poe's masterpiece.

About the author
Author, poet, and literary critic, Edgar Allan Poe is credited with pioneering the short story genre, inventing detective fiction, and contributing to the development of science fiction. However, Poe is best known for his works of the macabre, including such infamous titles as The Raven, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, Lenore, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Part of the American Romantic Movement, Poe was one of the first writers to make his living exclusively through his writing, working for literary journals and becoming known as a literary critic. His works have been widely adapted in film. Edgar Allan Poe died of a mysterious illness in 1849 at the age of 40.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2013“Quoth the Raven, ‘Nevermore….’” I must admit that this is my first real encounter with the works of Edgar Allan Poe. I once read an abridged collection as a young lad, one of those Great Illustrated Classics with an illustration on every facing page. It didn’t really do much for me at the time, beyond leaving me slightly disturbed, but I recently found a free Kindle edition of Poe’s best-known work The Raven on Amazon complete with the original woodcut illustrations by Gustave Dore. I can’t say I completely understood the poem, but….wow. There’s a lyrical beauty to it, despite its hopelessness as the narrator descends into madness. It simply begs to be read aloud, preferably with as epic a voice as you can summon. Has anyone recorded Hugo Weaving reading this? I think I might pay money to hear that….
The poem is a narrative by a young student whose love has recently died. He is visited in the night by a raven that seems to speak, answering every question with the word “Nevermore” and eventually driving the young man to despair. There is a good deal of ambiguity here–is the raven real, or an early symptom of the narrator’s madness? If it is real, does it really speak? If it speaks, is it conscious of its meaning, or does it merely parrot back the only word in its repertoire? We don’t know, it’s up to your interpretation. If you’ve never read this, I urge you to. It’s free! If you don’t have a Kindle, Amazon allows you to read it on your computer. So go read it!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2013It would be ridiculous to write a review about the poem - who doesn't know its verses and how perfect it is? So I can make comments only about the edition in which I read the poem this time. Top Five Classics edition is really nicely done. First part includes really breathtaking Gustave Doré's illustrations, that fit the verses of the poem so well. Second part is text only for those who do not wish to be distracted by illustrations (?), and the third part is a condensed biography of the writer himself, that was quite interesting to me, because I didn't know much about Poe's life. That's it I guess. Not much, but neat pick for anybody who's charmed by the poem as I am, always.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2020This version contains two copies of the poem, one with 25 illustrations by Gustave Doré for Harper & Brothers' 1884 edition of the poem, and then just a text version. This book also contains a biography of Edgar Allan Poe’s life and publishing history, hence the reason this version has 63 pages.
The Raven is my favorite piece of poetry. It's gripping and haunting in its repetition. Poe’s descriptive use of works just captures the imagination and really brings out the terror this man was feeling.
Deep into that darkness peering,
long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, “Lenore?”
In just these few lines Poe paints a picture that captures the imagination and the unfolding terror. He truly was a master of writing and poetry. I reread this poem almost every year and it gets better every time.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2019This famous poem is always worth a read and re-read. Beautiful rhymes and an aching soul bleed on every stanza and of course it is all overseen by an all knowing Raven. This particular edition is fascinating because it also has a very long and detailed biography of Poe's life that upends some long held misconceptions about him. You can't lose with this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2020I absolutely love this poem. It's one of my favorites, and the illustrations that accompanied the story were hauntingly beautiful. But there was an awful lot of stuff in this version that I didn't really care about. Like the biography on poe, and the huge section on other books. It seemed like it was just there to take up page count. Still! The poem is very much worth a read.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2018Many people talk of this poem over the years. I read it long timer ago, and again and again until I memorize it; because it is great. I absolutely loved it. And of course, I had to read so much more of Edgar Allan Poe, of this great master. It is always intriguing to see what he would express. As with any Edgar Allan Poe book, poetry, and other forms of writing, I learned about good writing. And I enjoyed the wisdom of one of the greatest writers in American history. I highly recommend it for all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good read!
I really enjoyed this! Not only did it have the poem The Raven in it, it had a history lesson in it about the poet himself. I loved that and learned several facts about him that made me respect him more. I will definitely read more works from him. I want to read them all.
