Monsters and Mortals - Blood War Trilogy Book II Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

Rome: a city two thousand years in the making, once the most influential metropolis in the world. Mortal rulers have come and gone, great kingdoms built and destroyed. Yet one empire has outlasted them all, and the largest, most powerful vampire coven in the world has its roots buried deep in Rome’s foundations.

Disgraced medical examiner Fabio Morani travels there, following a trail of dead bodies left behind by a vampire. Deanna Matthews flees from hybrids—a grotesque half-breed mix of vampire and werewolf—and boards the first plane leaving Heathrow, bound for the Italian capital. A chance meeting throws the two mortals together and they find themselves embroiled in a centuries-old supernatural conflict, where the participants are hell-bent on their destruction.

Rome’s vampire coven is out for revenge, and nothing will stand in the way of justice.

This book of the Blood War Series is a vampire lovers requirement. The Vampires in Monsters and Mortals are AWESOME! They are so believable. Mr. Morgan has done some wonderful research in order to create credible vampires, and they werewolves are amazing.

This is not a love story, so if you want some fight in your bite this book (and series) is for you.

Dylan J. Morgan, in my opinion his name on a book cover means it's a really good story and you won't be able to sit it down until you've read all the way to the end.

Dylan Morgan's Monsters And Mortals takes the reader through the battlefield of a blood feud stretching back 600 years between vampires and werewolves. There are no holds barred between the two ancient races and any contact results in open conflict. To make matters worse there are a mix of the two races called hybrids trying to make a bid for control of the supernatural world, and caught amidst the chaos are two mortals- Deanna and Fabio- embroiled in the war unwillingly.

The story follows Deanna and Fabio's paths that ultimately collide and then take off in a new direction, the whole while the supernatural world is hunting them. This book is reminiscent of several spy thrillers I've read with the participants traveling through many historical and foreign locals, except instead of rogue agents as the antagonists we have vampires and werewolves. Morgan moves the story along at a brisk pace with excellently described settings. Fight scenes are plentiful and if you're a fan of highly trained vampires squaring off against savage lycans, you won't be disappointed. For my own tastes the characters could've been fleshed out more, but as this is the second book in a trilogy and I haven't read the first, much of the character's story may lie there.

All in all if you enjoy the vampire vs werewolf arena, Morgan has crafted a well-woven tale of blood, betrayal, deception, and carnage. Don't hesitate to pick up a copy and go for a fun ride through supernatural territory.

I'll be honest... it's not often that I give 5 stars to more than one book in a series. But I'll be damned if Dylan Morgan hasn't blown my system all to hell! Start off lower and hope that the series builds on itself and goes up from there... but NO, the first book had to be fan-freaking-tastic and I was left with no choice but to give it 5 stars. So I thought to myself "Well, maybe it started out with a bang and fizzles a little"... I can undoubtedly say that is not the case. While book one was a bit of a history lesson in the war between vampires and werewolves...and ultimately with the hybrids as well; book two adds mortals to the mix!

The story follows Fabio, who threatens to expose the vampires to the world, and Deanna, who is a threat to the hybrids because of a murder scene she came across. At first we are following two stories....Fabio running from the vampires and Deanna running from the hybrids. Eventually their paths cross and they go on the run together. But beware folks... this isn't a Harlequin romance! So if you are "lookin for love"... you are lookin in the wrong place.

I like the vampires and can see where a lot of what they are doing is to protect their own kind. I actually like the human characters in this book and find myself torn between who I should cheer for during a confrontation. The werewolves, well, they are a little savage and most of the time just seem to be flying by the seat of their pants. They obviously are great at holding a grudge since this war has essentially gone on for 600 years and they aren't likely to give up the fight anytime soon. Quite a few times the vampires are thwarted in their attempts to kill Fabio by werewolves showing up. The hybrids just want to take over the world and will kill anyone and anything that gets in their way...or looks at them funny... or has a twitch... they aren't really picky. So I don't really like the hybrids and their extinction wouldn't make me sad at all. With the hybrids spiraling out of control and the vampire coven leader approaches the Alpha male of the werewolves to call a truce to the war. Will the truce last? Can they actually work together to rid the world of hybrids without killing each other? We shall see.

The ending of this book.... did NOT see that coming! I really hope that book three goes into this story a little more; I'd really like to know if this plot twist has anything to do with why the hybrids are after her. While we are not jet setting around the world as much in this book, the description of the people and places is just as awesome as it was in book one. The author still puts you right into the story, right into that location. I am loving his writing style. I foresee a lot of Dylan Morgan books added to my Kindle library in the very near future! Monsters and Mortals is another great book in what is turning out to be a fantastic series. If you love vampires who don't sparkle and werewolves that don't resemble big cuddly wolves and thrive on bloodshed and, on occasion, all out chaos... ... ... ... read this book! You will NOT be disappointed.

The author knows how to move a plot and the characters at the same time. Refreshing vampire literature with a flare for excellent word choice and scene construction. While I am writing my second book I do not have a lot of time to read, this book created the time. Looking forward to following the author. Best regards, Michele Oshel Rosa author of Lost Centuries.

'Monsters and Mortals' is the second book in Morgan's Blood War trilogy, with a human main character now caught up in the war between these vicious supernatural species of vampires, werewolves and hybrids.

This book continues Morgan's action-packed horror story, maintaining the chilling atmosphere and brutality of the first book but with the addition of a human who is left no choice but to go on the run from these monstrous creatures.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it very quickly. I sympathised easily with the terrified human character Deanna and was on the edge of my seat as she used every resource available to her to avoid capture. The ending was just fantastic and I cannot wait to see what comes next.

    Highly recommended horror!
