Tainted Waters: A Suspense/Thriller Kindle Edition
Caught in the crosshairs of her father's past, Sam knows that to get her life back she has to unearth the truth...
Frustrated at being fired from her latest job as a reporter, Sam moves to her family's cabin at the lake. A place she hasn't been since her dad committed suicide there, twenty years before. The serene and quiet is soon ripped apart by memories that don't make sense, and by the new neighbors at the north end of the lake. They have roadblocks and armed guards and are very busy at night.
Keegan moves to his grandfather's cabin at the lake. It's time he finds out the truth about how his grandfather, his best friend, died. The stories don't make sense. He soon discovers that all the original cabin owners have died, of supposed natural causes. But is that true?
Sam and Keegan are the only ones asking questions and searching for answers. What they discover is horrifying. But who's going to believe them? How do they find proof, catch a man who has been able to hide for over twenty years, and convince others, before more people are killed… including them?
Tainted Waters, a multi-award-winning suspense thriller, is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2014An edge of your seat thriller that offers chills galore. I'd also put this in the mystery category, but for me, I figured it out at the very beginning. I will say though that one of the characters I'd thought was a villain turned out to be nothing more than a jerk. The story held my attention and I didn't want to stop reading until I'd finished, which is always deserving of five stars in my opinion. The author has a true gift for characterization. All the characters are interesting and believable.. Sam, the heroine, was the biggest klutz ever. Always falling down, running into someone or tripping over her own feet. Made me wonder if she had some kind of balance problem. Made her more human and thus more likable. I loved Keegan and Sam's niece. Although if I'd been Keegan I might have been tempted to knock Sam out on those occasions when she seemed determined to get them both killed. If you love thrillers or mysteries with loads of fantastic characters and superb plot development, you'll love Tainted Waters. This was my first book by Maggie Thom, but I'm looking forward to reading more.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2013Samantha, Sam for short, was only seven when her father killed himself. Now, 20 years later, she’s no closer to figuring out what her place in life is.
Flitting from job to job, about fifteen of them, she’s fired from her latest and retreats to the family lake house to lick her wounds and be alone. While there, she begins to question whether her father’s death was a suicide or murder.
Also visiting the lake is Keegan. He’s come to his grandfather’s cabin to get away from everything and try to get some writing done. He’s pulled into the mystery of whether his grandfather truly died of a heart attack or was he murdered. He begins to suspect the latter.
It figures. Sam may have finally found her calling. She’s good at ferreting out information and asking the right questions. Maybe too good as someone tries to kidnap her.
Thrown together, Sam and Keegan continue to dig into their mysteries. They know their getting closer to some answers as more attempts are made to kill them. The race is on to get their answers before someone gets them.
I felt a close connection to Sam. I too flitted from job to job, never really sure what I wanted to do. Some people are lucky and know what they want to do or be. Not me and not Sam.
What endeared me to Keegan was his need to protect Sam. He would be a great older brother and an even better beau.
You’d be right if you thought these two would become romantically entangled. But the romance is just budding and the story is powered more by the danger and intrigue.
I love a good mystery thriller. Each time I thought I had it figured out, I was way off, and back to the drawing board I’d go.
One of the biggest mysteries was what was going on at the end of the lake. I didn’t have a clue and was surprised when I found out.
There are a few mysteries going on in this book but you’ll never lose track of the story. The writing is down to earth and easy to follow and the story flies. Before you know it, you’ve reached the end and gotten your answers. Some of them will set you back on your heels wondering, “How did I not see that coming?”
Tainted Waters has murder, suspense, intrigue, and some well written misdirection that keeps you engrossed and guessing. A really good who, what, where, when, and why.
I received this book for my honest review. My thanks go to the author for a thrilling read!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2020Since others have outlined the plot, I just want to say how very complicated, exciting, outstanding and simply terrific this book was! There were so many twists and turns and feelings of "just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water"...indeed it was not! The hero (Keegan) and heroine (Sam) do not understand why they are being pursued (hunted really) for most of the book. It will help too if you can remember multiple names, as there are many characters! Keeping them all straight is an accomplishment in and of itself for the reader. I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest opinion. Karla B.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2013Thom’s book was like one of my Nana’s triple layered chocolate cakes, impossible to walk away from without licking the plate. (No, I did not lick my Nook. However, this was a one-night read for me and that’s my highest compliment.) This truth-seeking journey had danger, betrayal, generational family ties and romance. It was captivating from the very first page and it caught my full attention.
Thom mixed all the right ingredients to create a delicious recipe for an entertaining night under the covers. I wasn’t putting down Tainted Waters until I knew that Sam and Keegan were…oops! Can’t tell you!
The plot’s seamless, twisting turns and the tension-building exploits kept me flipping the pages.
The characters had depth and color, they were very easy to connect with and I’m looking forward to reading more books by Maggie Thom.
People always say, “Don’t quit your day job.” Well, it’s definitely not true in this case.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2022Sam can't seem to hold down a job. So, when Mr. Ozz so interested in her? Who is this Sam guy that seems to be wherever Sam is? Is he following her? If so, why? Tim Keegan is looking for answers on his grandfather's life and death. He writes books. Harry Donner took over the CEO of the paper and fired Sam even though Mr. Ozz wanted her there. What is really going on around The Lake and the four cabins there. People are dying by why and at whose hands or orders? I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
