- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2012What is at once satisfying about Fifty is the voice of Randi, the fictional adviser. Sometimes it's caustic, often it comprehends the media and the trends of our time, mostly it is inspiriting. Randi causes a post-fifty woman to re-evaluate her life and its opportunities. Yet she is prepared for our replies, the sort of thing that's said under the breath. You feel that you're not alone in having sentiments that sometimes can't be said aloud.
The book covers single women, working women, bodily conditions and grooming, children, and of course, men. I especially liked her situation-oriented chapter about the treatment of women by other women, on the job or socially. That subject isn't often handled although during our fifty years or so, women came out of the home and interacted with the world and each other.
With chapter titles such as "Witty Answers to Dumb/Nosy Questions" and "If You Haven't Grown Up By Age Fifty, (Sometimes)You Don't Have To", this book incorporates good sense with humor. I felt ready for anything after reading it and enjoyed Randi's night out celebration.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2012As someone who celebrated her big five-O nearly three years ago this caught my eye immediately as a must-read for today's fifty-something woman. Randella Anne Gage, Randi for short, is approaching fifty and what better way to mark the occasion than to write and record it for posterity. Written in an approachable, humorous and autobiographical style, Randi tells it like it is: which bits are creaking, which bits aren't quite working as they once did. After all, you have to have some battle scars for reaching this grand age, though she offers practical tips to help with these. A bit of hearing loss and osteoarthritis isn't going to deter Randi. Full of funny quotes and the wisdom of five decades, Randi delivers a positive coming-to-terms with things like weight, being single, doing your own thing, relationships, mastering social media, and of course, writing and getting published. This is the wonder of being in your fifties in this day and age, there is no one-size-fits-all, just diversity, and this is a core message in Randi's take on life: being yourself and feeling free to let rip regardless of what people think. And don't miss Randi's `Fifty Points of Living'. All in all, this book is a celebration of being fifty, appealing to us Baby Boomers and those coming in our wake!
