Book one of the series tells how three genetic engineers came to develop a cure for death - the Immortality Gene. Of course there's more to immortality than a simple medical mystery. In the story you'll find romance, the mystery of a secret organisation ruling the world, high technology, greed, power struggles, hidden places and murder. It follows the fortunes of a genetic engineer who flees a dying maniac trying to kill her.
Book 2 in the series is ‘Dark Secrets’ http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004SP6N3Q

From the AuthorIn this edition we've changed the language used to US English. However since some of the characters are English or Australian we've used their idiom and, if a written note is quoted, their spelling. Americans use terms like elevator, couch and a sedan with a trunk driving on a blacktop road. The English refer to a lift, a settee and a saloon with a boot on a tarmac road.
We started work on the A Vested Interest series in 2007. Since then a lot of the 'science fiction' in the story has become reality. There is now a much greater cure rate for CML; drones are rapidly approaching mosquito size; the virus responsible for HIV is being used to insert genes; nanotechnology is becoming more 'real' to everyone. As to immortality, some experts in the field believe that the first person to live to 1,000 is alive now. In medicine the word 'senolytics' may not mean much to you now, but it will mean a lot soon.
As to our sci-fi, we haven't run out of ideas so there will be more books in the series.

John Chapman co-authors the successful 'A Vested Interest' romantic technothriller series with his wife Shelia.
Born in Newcastle on Tyne, England John lead a pretty boring early life. He lived in a Buddhist monastery, a civilized place with no electricity, no phone, no flush toilet, stone slab floors and a water supply which ran down a field in an open ditch. When he was sent to boarding school he accidentally set fire to it. He became a chemistry teacher but was frustrated by not being allowed to do all the interesting experiments. He changed to teaching computers in the early 80s and was delighted to find they would do exactly what they were told (unlike his pupils.)
He met his wife Shelia in an Internet chat room in 1997 - see it does work sometimes! They had problems with UK and US immigration departments and spent three years as illegal immigrants in Canada where they earned a living designing web pages. That was followed by six years of teaching in London before returning to the North to pursue a career in writing.
So what are the books about?
The A Vested Interest series is based on the need for mankind to move outward from the Earth if we are to survive as a species. At our current level of technology that's actually possible but two things need to be changed. First, we need to extend human lifespan dramatically. Using genetic technology that really is possible! The first person to live to 1,000 is probably alive now. Second, we need to stop squandering our resources and efforts on fighting and killing each other. The Earth's population as a whole don't actually want to do this. In the series we postulate that a secret organisation of powerful people are the cause of much of the strife. This cabal control governments and make more money by having the world at war. A Vested Interest suggests that the only way to turn things around is to have a more profitable enterprise for this 'Order' to turn their efforts towards. The drive into Space to escape a doomsday threat is that better alternative.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2010Best book I have read!!! It will keep you on the edge through the whole book. The authors are experts at creating cliffhangers and switching scenes.
It's the story of a genetic researcher who quits her job in the US and re-locates to England. There she joins her cousin and they work on the ultimate of medical research. What she didn't bank on was the hate of her former boss. He's a desperate man. Totally for 'self' and a pretty good villain. He makes several attempts to kidnap her. Protected by her new boss, she hides in an apparently undisclosed location only to be attacked by her former bosses hit man who kills her!!! Is that the end? Not by a long shot!!! I won't tell you what happens but the heroine is in all the rest of the books in the series.
There's a lot of action in the book but also there is romance. Although the heroine is apparently in her late 20's she is not exactly experienced in love. She's never really had time for men and suddenly finds herself in close proximity to two gorgeous and intelligent men. She's attracted to both of these rivals. She makes a choice but only to come under threat and is forced to change her decision. She marries but why? She barely knows either of her suitors. One of them is rich, handsome, considerate and caring. The other is an arrogant womanizer who thinks he's 'god's gift to women.'
I've read all the books in the series and can tell you that nothing is what it seems to be. Some of the good are bad and some of the bad are good. It's not just death the heroine is running from.
It's hard to put this book in a genre. If I had to I would say it's a romantic thriller. There's more to it than that though because you'll also find murder, technology, science, medicine, tragedy, conspiracy, history, morality, humor and the quest to save humanity in the series.
If I could, I would have give it a 10 star rating!!! If you don't buy this book you will be missing out on the best book ever and I'll warn you now - you will want the rest.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2020I would have given this book 5 stars, except for the fact that the over -usage of commas as well the incorrect usage of same, detracted from the story itself. You need to get better editing in the future. (I majored in English literature -- the editing is too sloppy). There were also several misspellings and improper word usage. I became too tired to keep correcting them. I hope your next book in the series is better edited.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021Love this series - so much drama and so intense! Makes you stop and think about things....beyond amazing! The authors keep you invested in the story and trying to guess what the next step is going to be!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2014Like so many "series" books it is incomplete on it's own. Do these authors read Tolkien? I want to say I liked it, but I disliked the package. The characters are not fully developed, and the protagonists least of all. I understand the object is to get you to read the following book(not going to happen), but first I have to enjoy the first, and despite a good story, and interesting characters it left me empty. That said if you start with the idea you will read all the books in the series, it may be worth the time. Good technicians, poor story tellers.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2012Donna is a genetic scientist who quits her job at the start of the book. She then gets whisked away to London for her safety. This begins her journey into a world of secret orders, medical and technological advances beyond those known by the world, evil villans and secrets from her own past.
I picked up this book for free and am now half way through book #2. I read some of the reviews and wanted to make some comments.
First, yes, there are many references that include medical terms and technology terms. The authors weave this into the story very well. If medical/technology based details bother you; maybe you should avoid this series. I actually really enjoyed the technology angle- it is very fun to think about some of the things people have created in the authors world!
Second, the history and depth of the story line really drags you in. There are many unanswered things and from the looks of it around 8 books in the series to exapand upon the world!
Third, my biggest complaint is the character relationships. Donna, Ricky, Sam and Gary all come across as extremely immature when it comes to relationships/romance. I spent alot of time rolling my eyes at the ways these characters interacted with each other and felt like I was on a flash back to high school or maybe a bit of Gossip Girl inserted into the story. Gary tells Donna that he thinks Sam likes her. Ricky falls immediately in love with Donna with out any explanation and he breaks up with his current girlfriend that very day. Sam and Donna talk on the phone late night and he tells her that he loves her. All of this happens within a few days!
Overall, the story so far is interesting and fun. I did have to do a bit of glossing over the relationship aspects because it did not feel realistic for mature adults- but that has not ruined the story for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2020It has kept me interested from the beginning. I can't stop reading. Can't wait to find out what is next. You have to read the three book before this series so you can understand everything. Those are awesome as well

4.0 out of 5 stars A Vested Interest Book 1 (Kindle Edition)
Dr Donna Rigden resigns from her post at D'netics in Louisiana after her new boss, Forrester, who takes over the company halts her research. On leaving her job, Donna stands up to Forrester who swears to avenge her for insulting him. Her cousin, Gary Browne works for the Newcastle Stem Cell Research Centre. Knowing her boss' reputation for being a dangerous man he arranges for Donna to be brought to the UK immediately.
Donna has been in contact with Richard Triplet for 5 years. Richard is the son of very influential Sir Richard Triplet who owns and runs the Newcastle Stem Cell Research Centre. Donna finds herself caught between Richard and Sam, a surgeon at the Stem Cell Research Centre and is put in a situation where she has to let the one she truly loves go.
Forrest continues his search for Donna stopping at no limits, he finds her forcing her to go into hiding. Forrest also needs the therapy developed at the Newcastle Stem Cell Research Centre to save his own life and he stops at nothing in attempts to achieve his goals. Teamed with a sinister gangster, Forrest pursues Donna in Newcastle.
Will he get the treatment in time? Will he capture Donna and torture her to death like he intends? Add to the mix a secret order and an eccentric and powerful Matriarch Lady Annabelle Triplet and things get nail bitingly exciting. Lady Annabelle is Richard's Grandmother and provides much humour and entertainment but is a force to be reckoned with.
This love triangle with science and medicine as well as technology has a lot of twists and turns and is the first in a series of 7 books to date. I did have a few pet peeves while I was reading it, an English woman referring to a saloon as a sedan, Sam being the only doctor managing trauma cases. Where was the anaesthetist? The Neurosurgeon? The maxillofacial surgeon? The science is understandably simplified but based on real principles.
The book ends on a cliff hanger, leaving us wondering what our protagonist Donna will do next and what she and her friends will face, as dark forces are after the work they are doing.
A highly enjoyable read and I look forward to continuing to read the rest of the series.
