From the Author
I was 13 when I started writing the first words about my sexual identity, hoped that no one would read what I had to write. For seven years I pretended I was someone else, faked happy smiles, lied to the closest people to me - just so they would not reveal the worst secret of all. Seven years in which I hid in a closet of shame, prayed to the God of sexual identity to make me 'normal' like everyone else.
But I was not born with a bracelet of shame on my wrist. Shame has been dripping into my life for years by people who thought I was not worth it, people who thought I had no place in this world, people who believed that I was all evil in this world. The shame grew stronger with every "gay" shout I heard in the school hallways; With every bill in favor of the LGBTQ that didn't go through; With every hate article that described lgbtq people as perverts; with every bullying post referred to gay people as sick; With every hate crime against the LGBTQ. It evolved every time I was told I was "too flushed", "too pretty", "too sensitive". These were not easy years for a young boy who was just starting to discover the world. Those messages I have received for so many years, did not leave much room for pride in me.
It took me seven years until I was able to start writing the pride chapter in my story. Seven long years during which I took off the layers of shame, fear and guilt, until I felt strong and brave enough to come out of the closet as who I have always been.
2002, I am at the Gay Pride Parade for the first time. Excited and anxious I started walking towards them - a huge and colorful community, which seemed to be waiting for me to arrive. Thousands of people were there - smiling, dancing, happy as they were. In one incredible moment I realized that I had not been sick all those years. I hadn't been a criminal or a dangerous pervert who will end up his life sick and lonely. There were so many people just like me. I could finally breathe. I was fine, I have probably always been. The walk of shame had changed into a celebration of pride.
In the years that followed, I came out to my closest friends and family, helped others to find their way, I became an LGBTQ advocate and fought for civil rights and equality for all.
At the age of 28 I fell in love with the sweetest guy in the world and 5 years later we fulfilled the biggest dreams we always had - building our own family. Following a long and complicated journey I became a father to the most beautiful twin girls in the world.
At that day I swore I would do whatever I could to make this world a better place to grow-up in and educate the younger generation about acceptance, tolerance, and the true meaning of pride. 27 years after the words of shame, I publish my debut children's book about pride.
'A Day of Pride' is dedicated to children of all kind; To those who grow up in families of all shapes and colors; To those who feel differently or think outside of the box; To grown-ups who may have forgotten what pride is all about. It is also dedicated to the 13 year old kid I once was.

My letter to you
-------------------
My story starts with shame. Shame of forbidden thoughts, shame of impossible feelings, shame of simply being me. There was also quite a bit of fear in my story. Fear of disappointing my parents, fear of being exposed as I truly was, fear of being left alone.
I was 13 when I started writing the first words about my sexual identity, hoped that no one would read what I had to write. - Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2021Ms. Rainbow welcomes each & every one of you.
There is a huge gathering downtown.
Dad & Blaire (son); 2 moms & Claire (daughter); Mom & dad & Bonnie & Sam; & 2 dads, Elya, Liri, & Lucy (dog).
Ms. Rainbow has nothing but encouraging words for all.
A grandpa & grandma enter the march.
There are several drag queens all dressed to the max.
There is lots from other countries: Belle (Brazil), Michelle (Ukraine), Ken (Australia), & Diego (Spain) just to name a few.
It started to get dark & who should appear the Witch of Shame.
Ben has come to join the Pride Parade.
How did Ms. Rainbow solve the problem?
Wow, as a retired MH ES/K-12 school social worker this is 1 subject I enjoyed in MS. Twin boys & 2 lesbian moms. I’m sure there were other (LGBTQIAPM) students but that never came up. I did also work with them in MH & other things HIV/AIDS, Hep C, venereal disease, unwanted pregnancies, domestic abuse etc.
My daughter is in her 3rd yr. as a LCSW in MS (7-8) now, 20+ yrs. in an inner city 6A school (9-12),
I’m sure she dealt with this continuing/ongoing subject matter in HS.
I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.
An awesome book cover, great hand-drawn black & white or colored pictures, charming illustrations & proper font & writing style. A very professionally written children’s (MS/HS age) rhyming diversity storybook. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters, settings, etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great children’s educational presentation (LGBTQIAPM diverse students, being different, inclusion, social skills), movie, an animated cartoon, or better yet a mini-TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2021It's the day of the Pride parade. Miss Rainbow is there showing her colors and everyone else's. It is bright and sunny then the Witch of Shame appears trying to make people feel bad about themselves. Miss Rainbow counters the Witch. Will they all be able to overcome the Witch of Shame or will she win?
I enjoyed this story. I liked the diversity of the characters--age, race, sexuality. I liked the positive message given by Miss Rainbow. I love the love shown throughout the book. The illustrations are bright and colorful and show the difference between Miss Rainbow's message and the Witch of Shames message. I liked that positive defeated the negative. Worth the read for all.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2024A cute and inspirational read. Has a great message and lesson(s). I did have a criticism while reading, I didn't particularly care for the form that the villain took, but by the end it actually paid off.
For this book, I'd recommend getting the physical instead of the e-book, rather than that, definitely recommend.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2020This is a picture book written in verse about the day of pride.
We have Miss Rainbow that is excited for the pride day that has finally come! Various families have come to participate in this amazing day. I think is great to see such representation on a picture book, not only for the LGBTQ+ but also ethnicity. Nowadays to have all types of different families represented is so important for children that have this types of families but also for children to learn that not all families look the same and that that is normal.
Moving on with the story:
Suddenly on this day the Witch of Shame appears and starts to spread her shame-dust on the children. When everything seems lost and Miss Rainbow is hopeless and her rainbow colours have dispersed, the people come together, all holding hands, and spreading love.
I really liked the art style and I think this is a perfect book to bring awareness to the LGBTQ+ community to a young child and learn more about it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2020'A Day of Pride' is an enchanting story, more relevant than ever in the times we live in.
It is the struggle between light and darkness, good and evil, pride and shame, with an optimistic victory of love over hatred.
The book is suitable for children at all ages, written in a simple, yet sophisticated, accurate and intelligent language.
The author succeeds in pulling-in the readers (and the young listeners) to a plot which touches everyone’s heart, and a beautiful story, with various different concepts, until the exciting ending, that would leave every child with a very simple notion - we are all different but we are all equal.
And if a 4-year-old can understand this, then there’s still hope that every person can...
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2020There aren’t a lot of LGBTQ+ books out there, even less so books aimed for family and children, and this one is really a beacon of light. It’s a special, gentle, colorful, FUN and really optimistic book about LIFE. I think it’s really an opportunity for everyone wanting to meet, know and understand other people that are different from them, and for LGBTQ+ families it’s a MUST. I’m excited for my future girl/boy to have this book on their shelf, and I’m really happy for myself as well to have this on mine. I’m really proud of Roy, this is a milestone for the Israeli LGBTQ+ literary representation. So go get yourself a copy too!🥰
