Review
--The Haunted Bookcase
GHOST MUCSIC is a commendable and flawless mystery crime tale. The main strength of the novel is evident right away - author Patrick Linder's faultless writing style.

GHOST MUSIC by Patrick Linder is a detective story that falls in the genre of historical fiction and ends with a bit of reflection and philosophy...an enjoyable and worthy read.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2014There are many aspects of Ghost Music that I loved. For one, the plot was riveting in its complexity. As a part of the plot, the historical background also really added interest to the direction the story took. The idea of the past as an influence on the present is not new, but the way that it intertwined in the lives of the characters was brilliant in this book.
One of the main reasons that I fell in love with the book relates to the writing style and skill of the author. The depth of the emotional tone of the book owes a great deal to the gorgeously lyrical language. It is absolutely poetic in its descriptive qualities.
As I read, the characters themselves came to life for me. I found myself telling a fellow reader just exactly what I thought the characters might be doing in the sequel. Will the love interests in this book continue? What about the police partnership? Who is slated to be partnered with Marcus Brace? Will Marcus have regrets about lapsed relationships or other choices that he made? I have my ideas, and I will be so interested to see what the author has planned!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2014My book club of 7 women (ages 35 - 50) read this and had some mixed reviews. Here is a breakdown of the consensus:
Pros:
The book is a quick read, perfect for our group
The writing is excellent, very descriptive, you can tell the author has some skill with language
The plot isn't something you see coming right away (from a mystery-fan)
Historical information was very interesting and a great twist - would've been great to have more of that in flashbacks
The price is right
Cons:
The biggest con is the main character. He is unlikeable. One person stopped reading because she hated him so much. He doesn't seem cohesive. He's flowery and introspective one minute but beating people up and hateful the next? His relationship with the woman also seemed fake - between the 7 of us we didn't know a single man that would think or act how this guy did.
Ultimately a book worth reading and an author worth trying again in the future. For this book we think the fault lies with the editor. The editor should've helped round out the character and smooth out the edges of the book. With more editing this book could be a best seller.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2014Patrick Linder’s debut novel Ghost Music set quite a high bar for the author and for the Marcus Brace series. It’s rare for me to enjoy (or find) such a character-driven mystery, but from the opening scene (which reminded me of a David Fincher scene: dark and gritty and just plain cool), I was hooked on Brace and I was hooked on this book.
‘Music is a thinking-man’s mystery--it’s not for the faint of heart or for the dim of wit. Marcus brace is a complex and flawed protagonist we can relate to; but not only because he’s flawed, but because the novel examines these flaws so closely that the character on the page feels real, honest, and empathetic.
Ghost Music is a journey to find a killer, but it’s also a journey of self-discovery for Brace, one that leads directly to his past. In Marcus Brace, Linder has created a homicide detective with equal parts heart and bravado, and unfortunately for Brace (yet fortunately for the reader), opening the Pandora’s Box of the past might be his only means of salvation.

Looking forward to more from Marcus Brace and hopefully Ash.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2013Linder introduces us to an interesting yet extremely flawed character in Marcus Brace. Through a series of brutal murders our hero uncovers disturbing revelations about his own past as well as the victims and their murderer. A compelling historical story unfolds as we're led through damp Seattle neighborhoods. One can feel the soft raindrops and smell the briny Puget Sound as Linder deftly conveys the unique Seattle region. Let's hope Brace will be back soon!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2014Good plot that made sense. Too many use of obscure words and flowery description. One paragraph was the same sentence written three different ways. It bugs me when details are wrong, ie he called a car by a make and model but the model was from another car maker. Ok first novel, with room to improve.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2014This is a great book! I loved getting to know the characters, their thoughts, feelings and fears. I felt close to them and wanted to know more. The overall mystery unfolded nicely and I was not at all expecting the end. I would higly recommend this book to all of my friends as well as my book club. We will get it on the agenda after the holidays!
