- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2013Book is written on a 5th grade level. No new original plot and characters that might have been created via dice rolls.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2014The Ghosts of the Past is the second book in Laurel A. Rockefeller's epic Peers of Beinan series book. It's a very different book from its prequel with much more sex and violence than you find in "The Great Succession Crisis" which I found a bit surprising after reading Great Succession Crisis. Spanning four generations, it focuses less on the royal family from house Gurun and much more on the lives of ordinary, non-royal Beinarians which I really enjoyed exploring.
As a bigger book and with a more epic story, Ghosts is able to explore the intricacies of the argene industry, with all of its benefits and environmental consequences, which I think are very well presented. There's also a large cast of characters that I think keeps the political aspects of the story interesting without being overwhelming.
Another facet to Ghosts of the Past is the variety of the different locations throughout the story presented with just the right amount of detail. There's also two mysterious characters near the end of the book that leave me wanting to know more about them and looking forward to learning about them in the next book.
Last, the book ends with mysteries unsolved, making me eager to read book three.
Overall, I really liked this book and definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a great mystery-adventure.
