Terror ravages planet Beinan as the reincarnation of Lord Janus and his allies exact their revenge on house Gurun and its allies. Haunted by the loss of his parents to terrorism, it falls on Lord Knight Elendir of house Ten-Ar to solve the mystery of his father’s death and stop the ghosts of the past from killing everyone he loves. But Elendir’s youth and pain is his weakness, making him prey to the sexual manipulations of his enemies. Now it is a race against time to save the people he loves most before all hope is gone forever and Beinan falls to the blood thirsty monster his own failings helped create. The lives of billions hang in the balance in this exciting middle chapter to the Legacy of Princess Anlei Trilogy. From the Author

The Ghosts of the Past is the epic middle chapter of the Anlei's Legacy Trilogy.  It was also the quickest to write, taking just 40 weeks. This is the dark middle chapter, the trilogy's "Empire Strikes Back" where I found myself tapping into my darkest memories from a violent childhood. But it is more than just an expression of long repressed memories of evil, vengeance, and pain.  This story, while dark, is fundamentally hopeful and filled with music. Six songs appear in this epic, two of them with their music retained, recorded as the soundtrack to the book's trailers.  Here, more than any other story written so far, you hear echoes of "The Lord of the Rings" singing in harmony with "Pride and Prejudice." This is a story of love, loss, hope, and sacrifice.  Prepared to be inspired.

Book is written on a 5th grade level. No new original plot and characters that might have been created via dice rolls.

The Ghosts of the Past is the second book in Laurel A. Rockefeller's epic Peers of Beinan series book. It's a very different book from its prequel with much more sex and violence than you find in "The Great Succession Crisis" which I found a bit surprising after reading Great Succession Crisis. Spanning four generations, it focuses less on the royal family from house Gurun and much more on the lives of ordinary, non-royal Beinarians which I really enjoyed exploring.

As a bigger book and with a more epic story, Ghosts is able to explore the intricacies of the argene industry, with all of its benefits and environmental consequences, which I think are very well presented. There's also a large cast of characters that I think keeps the political aspects of the story interesting without being overwhelming.

Another facet to Ghosts of the Past is the variety of the different locations throughout the story presented with just the right amount of detail. There's also two mysterious characters near the end of the book that leave me wanting to know more about them and looking forward to learning about them in the next book.

Last, the book ends with mysteries unsolved, making me eager to read book three.

Overall, I really liked this book and definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a great mystery-adventure.
