- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2016A wonderful new world ... maybe a future world, maybe what was, or maybe what is somewhere else.
Great character development. Inspiring story. I want to read more
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2013This book was the first of its type I've ever read, as fantasy does not usually draw my interest or attention.
I found the book very satisfying in the sense it gave me a whole new perspective of people and of another world; a fantasy world, yet it felt so real at times.
The author, C.G. Ayling, writes with depth, passion, and meaning. The detailed writing enables a person to picture exactly what the characters look like, are wearing, and what they are doing.
We are introduced to what seems to be a lawless world called, Malmaxa, and its people, the Seizen. There we are taken through brutal battles with beasts and with other men and women warriors. Back in the villages, the warrior's families all await their loved ones return. They practice rituals and have what I simply call, talents. For example, a Symbologist; tattoos all a families' symbols they proudly display down their arms (you see this on the cover of Beltamar's War). Also, a Symbologist is a very spiritual role and takes a special person to fulfill it.
The pride they carry is felt within each family; within each character and with everything they do.
All the characters the author has created are very strong and realistic. You have no problems believing this world and its people, actually exists.
As I read the book, I felt how powerful their family unit is; the family means everything to them. Their loyalty, love and commitment to one another is touching, and is something that lacks in our own world today. To capture that and incorporate it in what is a primitive, brutal world, is wonderful.
C.G. Ayling has created a new language to compliment the story in his fantasy world of, Malmaxa. Do not let this be a deterrent though, as the glossary at the back of the book, puts light on every foreign word in the book. It doesn't take long to get used to the meaning of the words, as they are used often enough throughout the book.
I'm pleased I purchased both books, Beltamar's War & The Pilgrimage, at the same time. I'm looking forward to re-entering the world of Malmaxa, and finding out what happens next!
I want to thank the author, C.G. Alying, for his kind gesture of emailing me a free copy of The Pilgrimage.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2015There are certain requirements needed in a story for me to want to continuously go back and re read, just so that I may once again live in that world. It needs to be so intricately woven that I'm left reliving each bit of it. It needs to engage my emotions, all of my emotions. And by engage, I mean I need to laugh out loud, shed tears, feel my heart quicken or break, clench my teeth in anger, and everything in between. It needs to be free flowing so it's easily read, yet poetic in nature so that it paints the picture in my mind.
Beltamar's War has achieved all of these requirements. I bow down to Mr. Ayling and his beautiful writing style. I finished this book yesterday morning and I am still processing, still infused in Malmaxa's essence.
This story is an intricate web in which you follow many key players in multiple locations. You are able to know what each group is doing at roughly the same time as the others, yet the way it is laid out is easily followed. As you are reading, you come to have strong emotions about each key player, yet they are ever changing and flowing because what you think is the truth is not always so. You are left guessing and wondering at each turn. At more than one point the tears were flowing, my heart was breaking, and then a twist would occur and I was left breathing a sigh of relief. The humor! Oh the humor...I absolutely loved the little comments here and there that had me cracking up.
To me, the best part of this story was the connection of family. It was so easy to lose yourself and feel as if you were there, part of the love and connection between these people. At times I felt as if I could partake in the loving banter.
I have come to love each character as if they were a part of me. Yes, I have a favorite that calls to my heart and soul, but I truly love each one.
Malmaxa is a world in which you can easily jump into and fall in love, with the land, the people, and the way of life.
