- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2014What happens when you take the tried and true methods of great scifi/fantasy (simple thought experiment) and masterfully integrate them with the tired, one-dimensional tropes of traditional romance novels?
Rachel Hamm's new book Honor's Lark achieves this by asking the question: "What would a world be like in which ALL relationships are truly fated?" Well, ALMOST all relationships. The main character, Honor, is someone who doesn't fit the mold. She seems lost. How does she adapt to her world? Better question-- How does her world adapt to her?
This book is well-written and well-developed, deftly balancing the expectations of romance readers and fantasy readers. There are no vampires, no meta-humans, no ghosts, and no extra-terrestrial romances. It's a parallel world with just a SINGLE basic modification from our own Universe. What if you knew there was one person out there who you are waiting to find and who is waiting to find you?
At first it's difficult to like Honor. We readers always want to like the main character, especially if we are totally trapped in their heads, subject only to their sole and limited perspective.
As you read between the lines you begin to see the cracks in the 'perfection' of this world. You and Honor meet Sedric, who's a breath of fresh air in spite of his mystery and tragedy.
Then, subtly, your opinion changes about Honor and before you know it you love her and all her flaws. You've made it to the end of the book and you're biting your nails, waiting for the next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2015The writing was interesting, I definitely liked an alternate but similar universe. I appreciated the ending. Hit on plenty of real life frustrations, friends having different lifestyles, parents aging and dying, general unacceptance. I suppose I have met hard headed people who are bent on continuously putting themselves down and not thinking of themselves as worthy, but there was too much self deprecation of Honor for me. All in all, it was alright.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2014I was immediately entranced by the original nature of this story - part fantasy, part romance with a dash of mystery. I love the fact that Honor is a deeply flawed character. From the beginning we see her as ornery, angry and downright sarcastic. But as the story continues, you are given a window into her pain and watch as she tries to piece together the reason she has not found her lifemate. Her life becomes even more complicated as she finds herself attracted to the one person who is helping her to solve this mystery. Each step that she takes brings her closer to life altering decisions about her career, her love life and her beliefs. Ms. Hamm does an excellent job of luring you into her story and leaves you with a degree of uncertainty in the end. I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2014It has been years since I carved out time to read a book for pleasure; however, this past year was particularly stressful, so I decided to make time. I selected Honor’s Lark on a friend’s recommendation and I must say this was one of the wisest, if not the only wise, decision of my year. Ms. Hamm has succeeded in creating a work of art that has the ability to speak to readers on multiple levels, or at least it did to me. As a result of the author’s ability to write in such an engaging and evocative manner, I found myself not only following Honor’s quest for closure, but examining my own. I look forward to reading many more of Ms. Hamm’s works for they truly are works of art which inspire personal and emotional growth in the reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2014I loved Rachel's first book (twenty-five) so much that I had to see if she had more, so I looked her up on Facebook. There I was pleasantly surprised to learn that she was writing another book. Once I picked up Honor's Lark I could barely put it down. I finished it in just a few days. The story line was great and always kept me interested. Rachel is a great fantastic author!!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2014Hmm, to be in a world where there are pulls to the only person you are fated to be with for the rest of your life, and there was no guarantee that the person would be your match in every way? Sounds stifling. Lime there is no choice. That I s the point of view I got. The story is unique in that feature and the author did an amazing job tying it all together. The characters were relatable in the aspect of love, loss and not finding love ever. I will watch for more from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2015I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The premise of the book is super intriguing. Every person is destined a life mate- it is preordained. Every person feels a pull toward his/her mate, when they meet, they are mated for life. It was a well thought out plot with good detail and very believable. Honor no longer feels a pull, which leaves her very distraught in her life. She befriends her new boss and after time and feeling connections to him, begins to question the mating structure.
This book was good. I had trouble liking Honor at first, but once she gets into a relationship with her boss she grew on me. The ending leaves you wondering what's next, but since this is Book 1 I assume there will be more. I would read the sequel. I want to know what happens next.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but very much fantasy
Honest review of Honor's lark. I have to say that I love Rachel's first book 25 and I was so looking forward for Honor's Lark. I love romance novels, but Honor's lark was too much fantasy.
